Sabertooth X79 SLI possibilities...

I have a Sabertooth X79 and 2 Asus 680s (DirectCU II OC) cards to install.
The cards are 3 slots wide so wondering if I have to use the 1st and 4th slot only. The docs say those slots are SLI ready but I'd love to use the lower slot for better breathing space.

Motherboard says slot 6 is PCIe 3.0 X16 but (at x8 mode)

As long as you have the clearence between the bottom slot and PSU it will work for SLI.
 
x8 will be fine for SLI 680s. You should run the hack to enable PCI-E 3.0 on x79 systems with nVidia cards.
