a64 3200+ on giga k8ns 939 w 512 verto ddr500

Stock settings on my chip are 10x200 for 2000mhz. 10x220 is stable in memtest and pi. After poking around in this part of the forum, I lowered the multiplier to 8x and raised the mem(FSB) to 250, for 2000 mhz. a 9 multi isnt stable- made it to desktop and looked in cpu-z, and it re-booted, adding voltage to 1.425 didnt help. So, 8x250 is stable, as is 10x220.
I dont have much exp overclocking the fsb, I always raised multi (either mobo or ram wouldnt go higher ).
Which is better, 8x250 or 10x220?
 
run some benchmarks, though the faster FSB would benefit, 200mhz on the A64 architechture helps out alot...
 
Would my power supply be holding me back? Antec truepower 430, about 3 months old, with 26A on the 12v rail

Make sure after 220 fsb you lower your HTT multy to 4x, and after 250 fsb, 3x, or you will have stability issues. Keep HTT less than or equal to 1000mhz.
 
Also you say you raised your Vcore to 1.425 in an attempt to make it stable. Was 1.425 the BIOS setting? If so please reconcile that with something in Windows, like Cpu-Z. The value will probably be fluctuating but tell us what it reports (cpu must be at load if cool'n'quiet is on).

On my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat, a setting of 1.425 in BIOS will result in about 1.35 or 1.37 actual volts. This may or may not happen to you. If I were you I wouldn't be afraid to raise the voltage more until you get it stable at 250x9, because honestly it should run that. Just watch your temps to make sure everything is normal.

You're probably right. I had lowered the HTT to 3x, and tried 2x, no go.(Right now the HTT is at 3x.) I also tried setting the cpu voltage at 1.450, no go. I didn't want to go higher than this on the voltage and fry my new chip. :)

Stock retail cooler/fan, in a 70F room, cpu temp is 71F. :) On CPU-Z, voltage shows as 1.425V. I'd post a pic but no host. :)

Whats a safe voltage? I use the stock retail cooler, and I even kept the stock TIM instead of AS5, to keep my warranty (as if Ive ever used the warranty anyway LOL)
 
Yeah for some reason on this board my ram voltage is running lower then its supposed to, I actually had to raise my VDIMM to keep this (superb) g.skill happy at its stock setting of 275, so you might experiment with that.

That said I haven't been able to complete a benchmark with this board over 275 yet, but I haven't had much time lately.

BTW I use stock heatsink, MGE 450W case, and didn't lower HTT at all to get these speeds.

Generally these chips will go far on stock voltage. Going past 1.4 or 1.45 is safe but you'll probably want to slow down once you get near 1.5, especially on stock cooling. Basically I'd only go as high as what allows your chip to stay at or under 55 degrees Celsius at load. When you say your chip is 1 degree over ambient, I assume you mean idle with cool'n'quiet on. If your chip reads that at load then it must be the wrong temp. Make sure the temp is changing as much as it should from idle to load. Basically it should be around 50 degrees Celsius at load.

If you can boot in Windows at 2250 then there's a good chance you can get it stable there. Just make sure everything else mentioned is in effect when you test it. (4x HTT, actual Vcore between 1.4 and 1.45, some people say put your agp at 67 but mine has always worked at whatever I set it at)

One more thing you might want to try is to manually set your memory options. Sometimes overclocking and leaving "Auto" leads to instability.
 
Cool n Quiet is off, I had to turn it off to lower the multiplier. Last night I got it to 85F in a 70F room after gaming for a few hours (World War 2 Online which stresses CPU more than GPU )

the only thing that confuses me is the option in BIOS "Enable 2t timing"
the manual doesn't really explain much about the bios, everything Ive read only confuses me; if you disable it, are you running at 1T ?? its at auto right now.....
 
85 degrees Fahrenheit is under 30 degrees Celsius. That can't be correct.

Download and install Speedfan -> http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Run it and look at the temps listed. There might be one or two that gives a wacky reading like -1 deg C and doesn't move - just ignore that. Other than that there should be 2-3 temps reading between 20 and 50 degrees Celsius.

Let your computer idle and observe the temps. Run Prime95 http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm and watch those temps. One of those temps should jump from around 35 or 40 to around 50 degrees within seconds. THAT temp is your CPU temperature. Compare that number with those in whatever temp monitoring program you use and if the same number is listed (no matter what it is labeled as) you can look there to see your CPU temp.
 
well bios, sandra, motherboard monitor all show the same temperature, nvidias Ntune shows
23C as I monitor right now, just finished a round of quake3. :) gigabytes EZtune says 73F.
ok just ran rthdrbl and it went up to 81F.
installed speedfan, temp 1 is 77F, temp 2 is 77F, 3 is 18F, 4 is 34F it shows my vid card too 6800 gt, as 119F
just ran superpi it got to 80F

running prime now.......

its running right NOW and temps are 86F, per motherboard monitor, speedfan, ntune, and eztunes monitor
 
Torture test ran 5 minutes, 1 error, hardware failure detected, execution halted. error was rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4....
???
Temp did get to 86F tho...
 
Set all back to stock- 10x multi, 200 mem - htt 4x finished 7 min no error in Prime95
yet error at 8x250 ??

thoughts?
 
Hmmmm

Ok, machine ended up finishing 20 min of prime @8x250 -- with one stick of pny/verto ddr500

after installing second stick of ram, machine wont do 250 bus- at any multi, even as low as 6

dual channel mode, 2 512mb sticks of ram, stable at 220x10-

extra voltage doesnt seem to help this memory- if I raise the voltage it just crashes memtest faster

why nolt 250 fsb with 2 stix of ram?

Thoughts?
 
Are you lowering your timings appropriately? At 250 fsb you should be somewhere around 2.5-3-3-7. That memory is 2-2-2-5 at stock 200mhz, right?
 
at 250 fsb, running 1:1, the mem timings are 2.5,4,4,7 - 2CMD

currently at 9x240, 1:1 ; If I lower the ram divider to,say, 166, the ram ends up at 200 , giving timings of 2.5,3,3,6 - and 1 CMD.

Ive been reading all I can about this setup- read that 1CMD is desirable over 2CMD even if you have to lower the ram speed to achieve it- I dont see that big a difference compared to running at 1:1 with higher latencies- so much to tweak - tweakers heaven :D

I havent tried a cas2 with this ram- all I know so far is it doesnt like extra voltage- even a 0.1v bump leads to memtest errors

with the ram on a 133 divider, I booted into windows last night at a 260 fsb, 8x multi, seemed ok,. so I went for broke and ran the fsb up to 300. Nothing excpet reboot at post screen- so clear CMOS, start over. :D Curious to try 8x275, which would give me 2200, (my chip doesnt seem to like speeds over 2200) BUT

Since the mem controller is in the cpu now, and from what Ive read A64 isnt as starved for bandwidth as its predecessors, Tbird, etc, then does trying to run the cpu at a low multi/high fsb still matter? Should we still be striving for high fsb/low multi, given the same clock speed? In the past this was true of the AMD chips- should we still bother to chase a high fsb??
 
Hmm similar to where I've ended up, see sig. I did goto 1.5V on the CPU and now everything's holding well.

My chip won't budge over 2300, and is running so much cooler at 2250 I'm sticking with it, even though the ram's running a bit lower at these speeds, overall she's so smooth I coulda care less about going higher until I get a new case/psu and watercooling in. (and by then probably the successor to the 6800GT throne)

CPU-z shows my winchester as Stepping 0 Revision DH8-D0, didn't take the time to check steppings on the chip itself and it doesn't appear to be on neweggs sticker on the CPU box. It does say malaysia tho.
 
Was reading through this topic and saw someone said 2X HTT was a no-go. Has anyone ever been able to get 2X HTT to work? Mine never works past 3X HTT
