S12 Clicks

My computer was making an annoying clicking sound after I first started it up (thus, new build). So I stuck my head around and poked at all the fans until I was sure it was coming from the power supply.

I pulled it out of the case and looked. The sound was akin that of a cable getting in the way of a fan, so I was looking for something a loose cable. However, I couldn't find one...I turned on the power supply and the clicking started again, but I couldn't find from where (other than the power supply). I turned it off, and the clicking stopped, but the fan continued to spin (as fans don't stop right away).

Sooo...I have a Seasonic S-12 that is 0 years old that clicks. Is that normal? I'm sure it's none of the other components, unless my sense of hearing is that horrible (as I physically put my ear next to the PSU).

Thanks for any ideas.

It sounds (no pun intended) like their is a cable in the PSU that is rubbing against the running fan causing the click. Maybe a fan wire or something. Turn of your system, then unplug the power cord and push the power button a couple times to get all the power out of your system. Then open up your S12 and see if their is any wires close to the fan. If so, you could tape them with scotch tape or something to the inside wall of the casing.

I was hoping I didn't have to open the thing up...but anyway, I guess I wasn't too clear in my wording..

After cutting power to the fan, it continues to spin a couple times before it stops, but the clicking stopped right after I cut power to the power supply.

So..

Power supply = no power = no clicking
Power supply fan = no power = continues to spin = no clicking

If it's not something stuck in the fan, I'd hate to think what it might actually be (arcing?!?!)

RMA time. Power supplies aren't supposed to click. ;)

Thats probably because fans don't stop right away, they continue till their is no more power or momentum.

Right. So if the sounds was the sound of something stuck in the fan, then the fan would continue to click as it spun down.

It might not click as it spins down if it is spinning down at a low speed :)

*smacks forehead* Jonny, you might be bashing your head against a brick wall on this one... :D

I don't know...I'd really rather not take it apart. I've looked it from all angles and got a pair of pincher thingies and poked around and I don't actually see anything close to the fan.

Odd..

bleh..

My reasoning was the same as jonny's, if something is in the way of the fan, then it would continue to click as it spun down...

However, if the fan were to spin down at a lower speed, would it somehow "lower" itself (physically)? Because even if there was still a cable or something there, I'm pretty sure it'd continue to click until the fan stopped completely.

I'm not really sure what exact sounds would be made. I'm just trying to say that it may be worth it to see if their is a wire in the way before you RMA it.

Yeah, but if he opens it, he can't RMA it.

Take a toothpick or popsicle stick and manually turn the fan around... slowly. You should feel an obstruction if it was just something stuck in the fan.

I'm trying to not have to send anything anywhere. I like having a computer to use. ;)

Guess I'll take a closer look later today (thumbs down for homework and classes). I really don't see anything, and I googled for reviews, and silentpcreview took one apart and I don't see any loose wires. -____-

Just thought I'd throw this out on [H] to see if I'm missing something.

edit: I'll try a toothpick this time and do it much more carefully.

Okay, looks like dBtelos was right, guess there was just something in the way of the fan.

I just poked at stuff and pushed the fan around a couple times, and then quit because I wanted to eat dinner. Plugged it back in and it's quiet!

yay...

haha, so weird..

Thanks for the help anyway guys.

looks like dBtelos was right

No..way.... :D glad you got that fixed, I would hate to think that I now have to count the number of S12 RMAs on two hands... :D :D
