S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Release Version) Performance Issues

I run it at 1600x1200 with most settings to max (some of the shadows and stuff turned down) on the object dynamic lighting and it looks DAMN good, and overall is very playable.

One of the biggest problem areas, I've seen after editing my User.ltx file, was around the fire barrels. I've literally seen a drop of roughly -30FPS just being a step too close to them. Walking a few feet and the FPS goes back. There really should be some setting we can adjust to correct this. Maybe not have all the Fire barrels so high with flames? I mean some are surely to reduce to smoldering coals with no one around, right?

My flashlight wont work at all! I've got the latest patch and everything is maxed out and runs awesome. This flashlight is really pissing me off! By the way, I have an 8800GTS 640.
Someone please help!

I've tried to use L and even re-assigned it and it still doesn't work. I've read other people are having this problem too, but there is no fix for it yet.

Find a new battery pack, or buy a new flashlight from one of the traders. In the zone, it's really easy to forget to change your batteries or lightbulb on your flashlight. ;)

Seems like its been established that an 8800 will handle it.

Is anyone here running it on a 7950GX2 with good results, using the current WHQL 93.71 drivers?

Thanks!

1280x960 everything maxed out.........1600x1200 required some compromises on settings but it was OK.

I still can't seem to run this game for more than 5-6 minutes.
I'm not sure if it's the new 8800 drivers or the game or what, but I can run the game maxed out with no issues, but it shuts itself down a LOT.
Quickload = crash. "Use last save" = lock-up. 10 minutes of play = crash.
I can't accomplish anything and the head bob is annoying as hell to boot. I'm sorry, but your eyes simply don't DO that.
Seems like I'm stuck waiting for another patch.

Turn off Dynamic lighting. Mine is pretty unstable with it enabled.

Also, performance at 2560x1600 is ass on my machine with SLI enabled when dynamic lighting is on. With it off, SLI performance is great, and I can crank everything up and get way more than 30FPS at all times.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. Thus far I think the game seems unique enough, so I *want* to play it. I'll turn lighting effects down and see what happens.

I don't believe that'll be necessary unless youre running it at his insane resolution too... I ran it smoothly on my old AMD 64 3000+ / 6800GT / 1GB DDR400 with the lighting on Static.. yours will run it just fine provided the resolution isnt too high.

Seems like they messed up on the dynamic lighting badly..this game kills ANY gaming machine with it on.. Sad!

Not necessarily true. 8800gts and gtx run decently even with full dynamic lighting. And resolution doesnt really seem to do much difference. 800x600 runs pretty much the same as 1920x1200 (on 8800gts 640 atleast)

Dynamic lighting on one card is actually quite playable on my machine. It doesn't work correctly in SLI mode and it causes the game to crash after just a few minutes with SLI enabled or disabled. With the game set to static lighting I can play for hours on end without issues with SLI enabled or disabled.

Turning off dynamic lighting did the trick for me. Performance was never the issue. I had everything maxed (1680x1050) and was likely over 40fps the whole time. The issue is that with dynamic lighting the game would just shut itself down or randomly lock after 2-3 minutes. When I turned it off, everything was back to normal.

i disagree. while on the surface it works decently, but much of the underground levels dynamic lighting drops my framerates into the teens... turning it off raises the framerate well over 100fps.

That is interesting. I would not have known that. If only I could afford SLI 8800GTX's..

I might have been a little over exuberant when I said it kills 'any gaming machine'.. haha. But it surely seems to be exhausting many people's machines.

What CPU are you using? The framrates dropped to around 15 in the open areas with dynamic lighting on my computer at 1600x1200. Still playable, but feels kinda choppy. It seems that most of the people that are saying that the game runs okay are using the C2D and 8 series card. Is anyone with the X2 (or Opteron dual core) getting decent frame rates from this game?

Sigh, my cpu was awesome a year ago. :(

I've got an amd 4000+ San Diego @3000 and an evga 8800 gts superclocked @ 650/975. I'm running this game @ 1680x1050 with everything maxed out, including dynamic lighting, and I'm averaging 60-80fps. My only problem is my flashlight won't work. I've tried everything except using another form of lighting.

Nope, an X6800 Extreme would gain you only 5 FPS. (test is w/ SLI 7900GTX)

Nobody has to turn off dynamic lighting I think. I'm running the game at 1680 x 1050, high, w/ the tweak - the shadow, AF, and AA sliders are all the way to the left.

Underground it was really slow til I killed off some guys, then it ran ok.

Stalker is a real sucker for video ram. It is no wonder if it doesn't run too well with 256 or 320mb of local video memory. This is what rivatuner says: Video ram is the "mem" where on the left is local memory usage and on the right is non local memory. Add them up and it's almost 700mb!

My experiences with STALKER with my 7950GX2 on Vista with the 101.41 drivers, is that if the game loads and the "syncrhonising" part takes a long time the game will load with a much lower frame rate (~20) but under "normal" loading circumstances the game runs fine at about ~50 FPS

I think it might be something to do with SLI, I can't tell, but all I know is that sometimes simply loading a new area will fix it, sometimes I have to restart the game.

Other than that, I think the visual quality is good for the sort of frame rates I get, I have most of the setting between medium and max, with the res at 1680x1050

Can anyoen else shed any light on this, possible fixes etc.

I refuse to patch, im 30 hours into the game and will NOT lose my save games, sod that.

STALKER doesn't seem to play nice with SLI. It works fine unless I enable dynamic lighting. In which case the performance tanks. In single video card mode it seems to perform better with dynamic lighting enabled.

The performance also improves quite a bit on one card at 1920x1080.

It was at 2560x1600, and yes that is a too high resolution with my rig and that game BUT it does use a shitload of video mem even at lower resolutions. At 1280x1024 it was about 500MB!

I can run at that res for only about 10 minutes and its locks up, It runs real smooth at half my naitive resolution. I am dissappointed becuase it looks so dam good at 2560x1600 . I guess it might work if i turn the sliders down a bit but man the anomolies look super cool with all the bells and whistles on:D

Anyone else getting this problem when loading sometimes?

When you load a new area or sometimes a new save game, the "synchronising" part of the loading takes ages and you get in game with a very low frame rate, about 10-20FPS

But sometimes restarting the game or loading a new area will load OK and the synchronsing part will just skip past in 1 second and the map will load with 60-70FPS as normal...

Im running on 7950GX2 under vista, 32bit was fine with the 101.41 drivers and SLI worked but now Im on 64bit the 101.41 or the 101.70 drivers both dont support SLI so im having to lower my screen res in STALKER from 1680x1050 to 1280x800 to maintain a good FPS.

I get the same problem on both setups though which leads me to think its not just SLI being disabled but some problem as the map loads like the draw distance isnt set properly or the culling isnt working or something like that. Even when under a single GPU the frame rate can be further slashed :(

*EDIT*

By the way, if you want a tweak to potentially remove the occasionally jerkyness in STALKER, check this thread out:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=89138

It shows you how to edit the exe and remove a cap which restricts the game from only being able to address 2Gb of memory, apparantly this is helping people remove stuttering even if they only have 2Gb or lower in the first place, I have 4Gb now and still get this problem so I will give this a go tonight and report back.

I'm fed up with this game. I walk into a house at the end of the first "level" and as I'm walking around about 7 bandits will materialize out of thin air and insta-kill me. So...I tried running out the back door to exit the level...but they're waiting for me in level 2 as well.
