I have seen that this feature is disabled by default in BIOS
I have read that this feature is for predicting HDs failure so I think I should turn it on, but I dont know if I have to format disk or can be this feature turned on and off at any time.

PS How does this thing warn you??
 
You can turn it on without having to format or anything. You will also need software to read the SMART codes. SMART is kinda like OBD on cars. It monitors different characteristics of the drive and will notify you if something is too high or too low. It's not going to tell you exactly when your drive is going to fail, but if you start getting a lot of notifications then it might be a good idea to go ahead and replace the drive.
 
i have downloaded program "SpeedFan" and temperature of one disk often goes over 50°C!!! (didnt know that disks have sensors :rolleyes: )

i have two maxtor 80gb disks, but only one have such high temp.
they are both "Maxtor 6Y080L0" models, but the "hot" one has Firmware:YAR41VW0 and second one have YAR41BW0.

i don't know if firmware on disk can be updated but even if it could be woud updateing it help??
 
What is the temperature of the other drive? Are they both in the same area of the case? How is the airflow over the drives? Does the drive feel hot?
 
the drive is probably registering incorrectly. otoh, it could be about time for you to lose a disk due to the motor burning out and it's trying to tell you that. back up everything if you haven't yet.

motor burning out :eek: is this that serious!!? would another fan help? :confused:

sorry for my english (i wasn't very goot at english classes :) ) but by "registering incorrectly" you mean that is not reading right temperatures?? if that, how can I test that??

....and if temperatures are really that high is that so serious??

this "hot" drive is 2 years old and the second one is one year old.

temps for the old drive are ~50°C (+-2°C) when surfing the web when copying they get up to 56°C!!!!

temps for second drive are 42-46 °C when surfing the web and up to 48 °C when copying

both drives are in the same area of the case (there is space for another drive between them).
