S-ATA SCSI drives necessary?

Are the benefits given by S-ATA and SCSI drives worth their ridiculous pricing? I know that they're great for large projects and swap files, but if you have a gig of ddr400, will you make use of the HDD speed? In terms of gaming, would you ever need to access the HDD with 1 gig of ram?

Another quick question, do high cd-rom read speeds offer a significant performance boost? This is kind of redundant because I would most likely run the games off of a HDD anyhow. Just curious :).

well, you still have to install games from cd, so yeah, 52x is good. :)

As for SATA (and SCSI) for a home system, probaly not really worth it atm, but eventually the HDDs will catch up to SATA bus speeds, and then it'll be nice!
SCSI is nuts for a home system.. though some people do run it, and like it! :p

if all you do is game (and light internet stuff) scis/s-ata/raid (any level) is not worth the cost, get a good name brand HD (like WD or seagate) with the 8meg cache and you will be happy. the fast cdrom is important (since they are so cheap nowdays i.e. >40usd) only when loading/installing the game, some games read the cd-rom at the start of the game/new levels and a faster cd-rom will help here.

but if you work with massive files i.e. >500 megs then a p-ide raid setup might be worth it. I know when photo choping/divix encoding/and the like raid works great, and if you still need more HD speed, you could step up to a s-ata(s-ide) or a SCSI raid. My main workstation has a 3 drive raid 0 15k SCSI setup for the scratch/swap file and it is worth it, it does thrash preaty hard, even with 4 gigs of ram (in dual ddr setup) right now i need more cpu speed :D.

Hope this helps.

exactly

as soon as you add creating graphics
(CAD, Photoshop, Animation Rendering, Video)
then its worth every dollar

alternately RAID is worth it, if its for redundnacy and not performance
(but still isnt a substuitute for backup)
