RX480 coexisting with RHD6970

I'm running a multi display setup so I used to have a RHD5770 and RHD6970 running at the same time. I'm not using it for crossfire or eyefinity, just to power the displays with gaming on the RHD6970 obviously.

I decided to pick up the RX480 to replace the RHD5770 since most of the newer games can't run that well on the 6970 anyway. However, I ran into a slight issue. Is there no way to have both the RX480 and RHD6970 running at the same time?

They're both made by AMD. Device manager detects both cards being installed, but display settings and Radeon Settings only see the first set of monitors connected to the RX480 and the RHD6970 somehow is invisible. I want to avoid buying 2 new video cards if possible.

Any suggestions?
 
When you say multi-display, how many displays are we talking about? Without going to a display port hub you could run at least as many as the RX480 has outputs and optionally 1-3 extra using the iGPU if you have one. Gaming performance is barely if at all noticeably impacted when i'm running multiple monitors on a single card if that's what you are concerned about.
 
How many panels are you running? On the surface, there's no reason to still be running the 6970 with the 480 there.
 
I am trying to run 6 displays. 3 per monitor. Only 1 supports Displayport right now and the others are DVI based so I can't daisy chain. The only options are to replace all DVI monitors with DP monitors, buy a second RX480 and still have to buy a few displayport monitors, or hope that the HD6970 can continue to be utilized until such time I can afford more Displayport monitors or replace my existing monitors as they die.
 
It doesn't seem like you are gaming. Get a display port 1.2 hub and you can mix and match to get 6 panels running. First you'll need DP to DVI adapters for all the panels sans the one that does DP. Run three panels off the DP hub and the rest off the card.

DP to DVI Adapters or can I get away with DP to DVI Cable? Or do they also need to be active dp adapters?

On the hub you can use cables. On the ports on the card, you can also use cables if you do not use eyefinity. *The hub effectively creates all active connections thus you can use a cable with it. Oh I have a couple hubs spare, the cool EVGA hub (which actually works way better on AMD) and an Accell mini dp hub. The evga is cool because the hub is all ports so you can use whatever cables you want for connections and yer not limited by form factor like the Accell.

Okay, so I decided to go out and pick up a Club MST Hub, plugged all the displayport to dvi adapters to those port. Made sure the power is connected. Display Properties see the display and so does Radeon Settings. However the monitor itself is black screen. :( Product description even says it can convert displayport to any other port so on paper it should work.

Am I missing something?
 
Use the windows display settings to enable it? You have to use that widget to setup yer panels. Just cuz a panel is not on, doesn't exactly mean it doesn't work.
 
Have you got active adapters? I'm not sure if this is the case with RX series + MST hub but for for HD/R9 series the maximum amount of "legacy" (dvi/vga/hdmi including passive dp adapters to those) displays connected could only be two - any more would need active adapters. It was to do with having only two clock generators on board for those interfaces or something.

I found that if i got my adapters mixed up and didn't have the active ones in the displays would be visible to windows but i would only be able to enable 2.

Radeon Settings detects all 6 monitors and windows display settings show all 6 monitor enabled. I can even move windows onto the other monitor. However the monitor physically is now showing an image. The lights are on. and every so often I get the no signal issue.

Its an active adapter. It has a dedicated power supply. >.<

I was able to use my accell active DP to DVI-D powered via USB through the HUB to get it working. Defeats the purpose of having this adapter to begin with. 2 of these adapters for 6 monitors cost as much as the 480 itself. Might as well have just gotten that instead since I still need to buy active displayport to dvi adapters anyway... :S

I guess I'm never trusting Club 3D products going forward.
 
That's good to know thanks, i've been on the fence about an MST hub for a while. For the time being until you work something out you could try the motherboard's outputs if you have a platform with iGPU, i did that recently temporarily when adding a rift left me in need of another active adapter i didn't have.

The hubs are quirky if yer not familiar with them however they do work but they have also have clear limits. I'm not sure what gear you have or how you are connecting them so I can't add much. I'd suggest you detail your setup.
 
On the monitor side, the top contains 3 AOC 24" monitors at 1920x1080 at 60hz, all DVI based.
The bottom contains a BenQ 22", and a Samsung 24" at 1920x1080 at 60hz and a AOC 29" 21:9 at 2560 x 1080 at 60hz.

The top 3 monitors are plugged into a 1 to 3 MST Hub via passive displayport to dvi cables. While the bottom 2 1920x1080 monitors are plugged into their own 1 to 2 MST Hub The 21:9 monitor uses its own displayport. The RX480 has 3 Displayport and 1 HDMI connector. the 1 to 3 MST Hub is powered by external power while the 1 to 2 MST Hub is powered via USB. Both are connected to some sort of power.

I've tested the cables individually and they are working when plugged into the video card individually. though the GPU seems to only support 1 passive adapter at a time. Since I have an Accell active DP to DVI-D adapter, I was able to get 3 of the 6 monitors working. (1 DP to DVI passive, 1 DP, 1 DP to DVI active) but this method utilises all 3 displayport, where is where those Club 3D adapters should come in. Since they supposedly support active signal conversion as stated on the box, I should be able to use passive DP to DVI-D cables)

Even when only 1 monitor is attached to those adapters or 1 adapter is plugged into the GPU at a time, it doesn't work. What does work is Windows Display Setting and Radeon Setting both see the monitors as plugged in and operating at 1920x1080 at 60hz. Since I had this set up before, the computer remembers the set up and windows are opened in those windows. So it appears to be working. But physically those monitors using the passive cable are showing a black screen. The monitor never goes into standby mode and the light is on as if it's displaying something on the screen.
 
To add towards the comment above. I picked up a 27" ASUS monitor today on sales which supported Displayport and plugged it through the 1 to 3 MST Hub and it worked, which further strengthen the fact that it does not actively convert displayport signal to dvi. :(
 
Well its mid August and neither of these cards are in stock with any appreciable amounts at Newegg....
