Hey all, It's been a year and a half since I lost track of the computer parts and gaming industry. I entered college and halfway thru my firt year, I figure I can't really game... So now I'm finally not taking any summer classes I'm getting back to my good 'ol gaming.
I spend the last good 2 hours reading up on the video card section and I figure my system is pretty out of date... But I don't know what to upgrade. I looked at RAM on newegg.com and find it's sooo expensive for my RAM type...
Anyways, here is my configuration as of now. I'd like to see any suggestions on how to modify this thing and make it play games again. I mean games like Far Cry, HL2, Doom III and games in that ball park with at least 1024x768 res, 2xAA, 2xAF, and perty eyecandy stuff leaning toward medium-high. This system was built 2 years ago right before I entered college.
Antec SX1040 case
Turbolink 420 watt psu
iWill Motherboard that supports intel (I think it's call P4-533-N or something since I recall it supports P4 and it's fsb is 533 and it supports only RDRAM)
Intel Pentium 4 2.26Ghz (non Hyper Threading)
Samsung 512 mb PC-800 RDRAM (I checked on newegg and it was going for $99 a piece!)
MSI GeForce4 Ti-4800 (traded with friend recently)
Creative Audigy 2 ZS (recent upgrade since everyone says it's good)
hd and things
Well, I've had my eye on a video card lately cuz I need a new video card right? Even after reading the long long long thread about the 6800 and the x800, I'm still very indecisive. As for the RAM, I want to upgrade to 1GB, but... good god, the thing is still EXPENSIVE. So should I ditch RDRAM and get myself a new motherboard and 1GB of some decent DDR ram?(which DDR is best now? Cuz I've seen some comparison and someone kept on telling me that DDR333 is faster than DDR400... ???) Will my processor still be able to cut it for these games? I mean, I just wanna find the best way to upgrade this system that will not burn a hole in my pocket.
Thanks for any input.
