I'll be painting the inside of my computer black soon and I don't want to get stuck without a computer or have to rush the project, so I want to run without the case for a while. I have a big drawer (a good amount bigger than my case) in my wood desk for files (the kind with the rails) which is made of wood, I was thinking of laying my motherboard on the bottem and the power supply on its side so the fan and exhaust are fine, putting my hard drive on a cushion of some kind and living without a disk drive for a while. Would this work, it would all rest on the bottom of the drawer. The drawer itself isn't very closed off either, air from the room can go in from more than one side.

Would this work?
 
I dunno about resting the drive on a cushion but the rest sounds fine, just monitor the temps, make sure it gets air and you should be fine, its not like your leaving it there for a long time!
 
Should be fine, but just to make sure, download motherboard monitor and watch your temps.
 
Its cool i had mine sitting on my desk for about 2 weeks no problems at all

Thanks, I'll leave it out as long it takes for me to paint the case...knowing me I'll take the case apart and it'll take me a week to find the time to get to painting it, I have anti-static bags I could put under everything, but the vibrations might bother me...a lot.
 
i think i had a mouse pad under the drives to get rid of the vidbration, but i didnt shut it down at night. it was too bright
 
I dont mean to steal the thread, but that is exactly what I am going to be doing :D

This thread has inspired me to run my computer caseless 24/7 with two WC loops. The area I have that would be perfect is about 1 foot off the ground in my TV stand. Picutred here: http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/Seufari/000_0045.jpg


What should I be worried about as far as a long term caseless computer is concerned?
What should I do when I need to vacuum the room? :confused:
Should I even consider placing my components there?

You might want to put something under the mobo to lift it up 1/4 of an inch or so. PCI/video card brackets have an overhang which tends to tilt the mobo up a bit and have the bracket supporting everything on one side. This could make the cards become unseated, though there's probably enough friction in the slot connector. You could also remove the brackets from the add in cards (normally two screws on the back.)

The biggest risk to running caseless is something ending up in the fan (usually a fingertip.)
 
I'll have the case on the anti-static bag on top of some foam...
If the biggest risk is finger chopping then I am going to run caseless 24/7...

man this would make life so much easier!?!
 
as long as you dont have a cat or flying squirel of that sorts. You will be fine. If you really wanted to get paranoid, id just take a card board box cut some holes in it and put it over the components. Animals are too curious for their own good.
 
Careful of antistatic bags, they are designed to conduct static electricity away from the strike point.
You can damage a board by resting it on one.

Interesting... What do you suggest then? The surface of my TV stand is wood, but like someone else said, the mobo needs to be elevated slightly so I figured I'd throw the foam pad that came in the mobo box...

Use a material that doesnt conduct and wont build up static easily.
I used to use a magazine or cardboard.

When a PC is out of its case it is very prone to static shock so take care to earth yourself before going near it (a plugged in PSU is a good earth).
Static can jump a surprisingly long way or leave you when you dont expect it.
