I just built a 2008 server and converted my 2003 server into a vm.

Now ive been thinking of getting rid of my whs and making a vm for it. I would have to get an ext raid for the space. You know one of those like 5 port systems for newegg always on sale.

I am some what nervous..........What if the 2008 box crashes and I cant get the vm. What if the array fails and loses it connect. Or what if a black out happens and both failures happen! I use whs to back up some vms too.

Obviously your data security is outsources to the RAID engine in that case. Do you have TLER-capable drives? What RAID engine/controller will you use? How will you connect an external enclosure? Most of those systems are very bad fakeRAID like Silicon Image; do you trust your data to such a badly reputable company?

thats the thing, I was just going to wait until I seen something go on sale at newegg. it would be esata. What if I just use jbod mode, is that safer? This way if the array fails I can still access the data and/or I cant see the device screwing up so bad it does something to jbod disks.
