anyone ever try wiring in one of these highly rated lepai amps off of a PC power supply?

https://www.amazon.com/Lepai-LP-202...?ie=UTF8&qid=1489532441&sr=8-1&keywords=lepai

i would love to have one of these to automatically turn on/off with my HTPC, having quality 12v power into it just a plus!

is this a stupid idea?

having some strange flakey issues with my old onkyo HDMI reciever, and realized i only EVER have it on one input, my HTPC's HDMI output... thinking about just wiring the HTPC into the amp directly and having it all integrated

EDIT: i have a barrel connector and molex connector on hand, so creating the adapter would be trivial...

I thought about it, I wanted to mount a little Topping TP-30 amp/USB DAC into a 5 1/4" bay, but never did.

PCs are noisy. PC power is noisy. Then you're going to amp it?

I would expect it to sound terrible.

Have you ever plugged headphones into your onboard sound and heard that screech when you fire up a game? It's going to be like that, only through your speakers... at volume.

I don't want my DAC in the same box as my computer. An amp would be even worse. There is a reason a lot of people talk about galvanic isolation, or think that optical is better than USB, or that Schiit sells the Wyrd to clean up power for USB based DACs.

Still, I think it's worth trying. Probably gonna sound like dick though.

I haven't tried, but have often thought about it. Put banana connectors on a blank PCI plate. Use internal HD-AUDIO/AC97 header to feed it discretely.

If it's anything like the crappy Toshiba HDMI daughterboards (eg. like in my SR606), it can be fixed fairly easily :

Have 2x SR606s with modified HDMI daughterboards + cooling fan running fine for the past few years

it's an old onkyo ht rc160

not sure if it's the same issues... like right now i think it never turns off... i hit the off button and the LCD goes blank but the light stays lit green, when i turn it back on you don't hear the relay "click"

and sometimes i have to turn it off and back on again to get it to display HDMI

I use to see these Muse PC21 internal TA2021 based amps on ebay.. I think it is a discontinued product because no sellers on ebay now..

I doubt this would be optimal.. you'd be better off with a little class-d amp on your desk (I think) .. but if you have a pci slot (amp is powered by molex connector but is designed to be seated into a pci slot... which may be an issue these days..

Do you already have the Lepai?

After doing a lot of research, instead of purchasing the Lepai a couple of years ago, I chose to buy this amp instead:

Then I bought a $12 laptop psu on ebay and have been using it ever since. It works very well.

purchased...

i was literally trolling craigslist for a nice cheap amp while this alert came in

i've been using my little lepai on my entertainment center and i just moved and sold some of my bigger amps i was using to amplify my set of roland drums... now i can use my lepai for that, find a speaker with a 10" or so woofer and i'm in business, i can use this stellar labs amp on my entertainment center...

hard to find reviews on it, but the price is certainly right, normally $179 and certainly has a lot of features and inputs, i like everything about it...
