Running SMP on main box?

For those of you running an SMP client on XP.

Is it possible to run the SMP client on a main use machine? Is there anyway to easily stop the processes when needed? I would hate to jump into the services menu every time. Thanks.
 
I just disable and enable my network connection to stop the process. SMP window would still beo pen and processes still there but they won't be folding. To start back just close of SMP window and run it again.



 
ctrl + C seems to work fine for me.
Although I haven't run anything that requires me to kill both my SMP instances.
 
When i do that it usually works, but there were a couple instances where the wu i was working become corrupted or deleted and the SMP client proceeded to dl a new WU and started processing that. With the reconnect of network connection I haven't had that problem
 
I dont stop the client, I just move it off a core or two as needed.

This works as long as you have plenty of memory.
I use SMP Seesaw Pro to move the client cores off a cpu core while I game.
I tend to isolate the game on one core, everything else then uses the remaining cores.
Once I finish, then I just reset the affinities so everything has all the cores.
No chance of looseing work that way and I get a better PpD than trying to game with the client running on all the cpu cores.

I use my main comp which is current an E6600 with 1 smp and can't even tell its running!

 
I have 2x SMP clients running on my main rig and run games and, well everything and can't even tell.
 
My main rig is folding 24/7 and I didnt notice any slowdown in my games :).

 
My Q6600 is in my main rig running two Diskless VM SMP clients. I find that I have to pause one of the VMs if I am going to be playing anything CPU-intensive (CoD4). For less demanding games (Sins of a Solar Emprie) I get by just fine with both clients chugging away.

That has been my experience as well. For Gears of War, it was better to disable SMP but for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, I can leave it running with no difficulties.


 
You need to turn folding off for what?.... I havent run into anything that's had issues yet.
 
I run two SMP instances on my main box all the time, never needed to shut them down.
Vista 64, 8GB RAM and Q6600 @3.1 I do notice that my RAM usage gets to 6GB on occasion, but I never have a performance issue.

It my main work system as well, during the day I can easily have 15 programs running, along with VPNs and multiple RDPs as well as network monitoring software and CAD software.

I guess a new FPS game might add enough load to need an instance shut down, but I don't play them. All other games seem to work fine with dual SMP instances.

Kill your network connection doesnt stop the SMP client? i have left it folding all day while my internet has been out and sure enough, it is still folding with out Inet.. ?
 
Ok, back to basics 101, the whole point of the folding program was / is to use unused cycles or idle cycles from your CPU.

If you are running even two SMP clients on a fast Quad you shouldn’t notice a performance hit except in the most demanding games or video rendering operations.

The only real hit comes if you decide to run Virtual Machines inside Windows on your main machine.

It all just shows to go ya that unless you are folding or into serious games we all have way more computer power then we will ever use. However, since were are mostly guy’s here we all know for a fact, bigger is better;):p
