Running dual psu's?

Is there any sort of FAQ or anything lying around about using two psu's to power one system?

It can be done a couple of ways.

Basically msot people don't need two PSU's becasue a single good PSU will more than handle the needed load.

I'm looking to build a dual opteron on the supermicro h8dce, and exploring psu options (details).

Apparently, that board works best with either 1 or 3 12v rails, and really the only psu with 3 12v rails are heavy-hitting PCP+C's. I'm getting a silverstone TJ07 case which has room for two psu's, and I was wondering about the possibility of just running 2 PCP+C 510's in there. It would still be cheaper than a 1kw and might give me the proper rail splitting.

No problem.....it also made teh FAQ sticky now. One more to consider is the CM stacker has a built in switch for running 2 psu's.

I don't know that mobo in particular but there are a number of tri-rail PSU's on the market that aren't arm leg left testicle expensive.

A spec complaint 3x12v looks like this for power distribution:

There are two types of 12V rail configurations for systems: 'Common plane' and "Split plane' processor power delivery. The 'commob plane' system has both processors powered from a single 12V rail (+12V1) from the power supply. The system in both cases, has an additional 12V rail to power the rest of the baseboard +12V loads and dc/dc converters. +12V1, +12V2 and +12V3 should not be connected together on the baseboard to ensure that 240VA protection circuits in the power supply operate properly

That being said a single rail 12v like the 510 should be able to cover most any build. Is all that will go in it in that link. Am I missing something here becasue that would be easily covered with a 510?

Well, I need some room to grow because I figure higher-end optys will drop once socket F is established, and I would like to go dual 275+'s at that point. I also want something that could handle a decent sli setup and some more hd's. I may just get the 510 for now and worry about the psu later on.

Edit: Even if you do upgrade dual 275's are in what TDP envelope? 89w or 104w?
89/12=7.41 amps each MAX for the family

104/12= 8.6amps each for the family

Either way that is TDP not actual burn.....and not a whole lot different from your current 246's.

Well I don't agree so much with AreEss on the theoretical side this time. I don't have this board in hand or work with it day in and day out so it may be the one very odd duck out there (however.....you aren't proposing a realy radical system either for the board) but......people never quite seem to understand how to figure power draws very well or that systems don't pull as much as they think. Take a gander at some of the figures from silentpcreview sometime.

Actually I bought 2x 248's. The whole system is ordered except the psu.

Thanks for the linkage on that Zippy. Zippy psu's seem hard as hell to find, but that unit really looks great. Has the right amperage and connectors and everything. I think I may very well order that one.

No problem. It is indeed a beast. And Zippy makes top notch PSU's....better I dare say than PC Power and Cooling

I finally got the tracking number from myaopen today (they're not very good about providing information, but once you contact them they're very nice). Fedex says the package is eleven pounds, and all that's in there is the psu

You know what the best part of that Zippy psu is?

It arrived Friday and they still haven't charged me for it!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again
