Running Costs

I've been looking at alot of picture threads, and some people seem to have a load of servers running 24/7. If I'm right, running a single 600W PSU 24/7 at £0.10 per kWh would cost about £45/month. Am I wrong in my calculations, or is everyone on these forums just insanely rich?

While I don't want to bother with the calculations, do realize that an X-watt power supply isn't always (or almost ever) consuming X-watts. Most systems under full load barely crack 400w. Check out these power consumption charts of a system (with these specs) running a variety of different card configs (including SLI/Crossfire), and check out the load vs idle numbers. Without a high-powered graphics card in the system the numbers will be way lower, even on idle.

So if I leave my server idling all the time, what sort of power drain would I be looking at? It has a 600W PSU and 7 3.5" HDs.

more importantly is the CPU and videocard running behind all of it. Those hard drives would probably add around sixty watts or so to the total idle amount, but I would guess the total idle wattage (of say a mid-level A64 based system with a couple gigs of RAM and a low-level videocard) to be around 150-160w.
