running computer on balcony

Hey there I just put my file server on the balcony... it's running just a file server over wireless network I tried putting it in a closet but too much heat and it was crashing a lot... it's got 10 hds in it and I just wanted to knwo if I should have anything to worry about ... I mean I"ll put some things on top of it to make sure that no rain gets on it at all but anything like condensation should I be worried or will I be ok?

Couldn't find any info on this on the net so I'm here :)
 
worry about:
people stealing it
birds crapping on it
water getting in it

If you can keep it dry, it should work OK.

whatever you do don't do this...it will die. Quickly. Even less airflow than the closet.
 
Use something cheap-looking to shield it from view of the public. Make sure water can't get near it, even it it's windy. Give it a roof. Make sure it is impossible (well, as hard as possible anyway) to steal it.

If I were you, I'd watercool it instead and put the radiator on the balcony. :p
 
I can think of a lot of little critters who would just love to make their home the inside a nice warm box...

Hmm, the only problem i see is the server falling off.... :p
Actually, placing it in the open is a very good idea. Good airflow means cool components, especially with fresh air. Be careful of wet. condensation, and of course, lovely little bugs that might crash the system or, worse, need cleaning out... :D

Condensation won't occur unless something is colder than ambient. Your system will always be hotter than it is outside, so you don't have anything to worry about. I would, however, worry about rain/theft/small animals, but I'm assuming you have that under control.
 
I generally don't advise running on balconies, it's easy to fall and hurt yourself.

Ok, in all seriousness, I wouldn't advise it due to theft, weather and wildlife. What might make more sense is a ducting system to bring fresh air in from outside to the intake vents on your computer (make sure this is filtered and rain can't get in the ducts) to bring cold air to the server. Then run the exhaust back outside.

Of course, if you put it outside because you don't have enough room for it, this doesn't help any.
 
I actually did this, in the basement, of course, I cut a 4 " hole in the wall to the outside, stuck a DRYER vent metal thingy and did the work around the the to insure everything is sealed, and I run temps of whatever the outside temp is, it actually kinda keeps the room cool instead of heating it up, not a bad idea, just alot of work and for the wife to give the nod, but thankfully she understands my obsession with computers and there OCing abilities......
 
You might try underclocking it to reduce the heat. Either that or get a better HSF. I would advise against putting it on the balcony though. Too much shit can happen.
 
If the computer stops running in the middle of a humid night you could wake up with a very wet computer.

rain, bugs, theft, safet (falling) can be prevented, but early moring dew and fog could be bad.

Also, since it's getting warmer out, I hope you live in a cold area.

Apparently Toronto.

With all the potential dangers already listed (bugs, theft, dew, rain, bugs, rust, etc.), putting 10 hard drives at risk seems like folly.
 
put it in your closet and mod the door to have some fans on it to move air.

try that!


don't put a computer outside! it is not good. you are asking for something bad to happen to it.
 
hehe crazy didn't expect this many replies :) Ummm well theft is not an issue it's a seperate balcony on the 16th floor and a penthouse suite so I'm ok there :) no dogs or cats... haven't seen bugs yet and I'm on the lake so there is fog ocasionally. The main reason why I want it somewhere other then my desk is because its' freaking loud as hell.... I'll take my chances if anything happens I'll post an update ;) Thanks all
