I just got a new motherboard and have been thinking. If I switched over to a SATA harddrive (maybe even 2x 74gig Raptors in raid 0) and then added 2 more DVD drives I could put my 2 most played game CDs in the extra 2 drives and then I wouldn't have to swap them out to use the other 2. I have 2 games that require the game CDs to be in the drives, I hate swapping them out when I want to do anyhting else that requires a cd-drive such s watch a movie, Install a program, copy a cd and such. I would get 2 DVD drives sense they will be able to play anything that might come out in the future and there really not much more than a cd-rom.
Is this plossible? How will it work?
 
A much cheaper alternative would be to make cd images of those CDs or DVDs and then just use something like Daemon Tools or Nero to mount a cd image to a virtual drive.

However, if you want the extra funcionality, then I say go for it, though it's more expensive and takes up some space..

Problem with that is the new copy protection scheme which looks for virtual drives and wont let you play your games if your useing them or not. I have tried that before but I had a couple games it wouldn't work with and it is a pain trying to set up, so I think I will just go with the 4 drives, it will cost less than $75 at the most!

I remember a long time ago someone sold a CD Changer for the computer, it fit in a single drive bay and held up to 6 CD's you could configure it as 6 differant CD-Roms or a single and switch between disks. I wish there was something like that around now!
 
hmm, maybe you should just get one of those SCSI CD towers, just a huge case filled with about 10-12 drives, that hooks up to your regular computer, i think by a network controller but i'm not sure.. they're usually pretty old but not expensive, on ebay though.

Otherwise, yeah I'm pretty sure it's possible, I did it with my old SCSI computer.. just plug them into spare IDE's since you're using SATA hard drives. Honestly though, I think I'll just work a little bit by swapping the approiate cd's than spend $75 lol :p, but I'd definitely consider doing this if i had a few extra IDE ports available.
 
In my gaming/experients computer I have 6 optical drives. An IDE DVD burner and 5x SCSI CD-ROM on an Adaptec 2940.

The drives go $1 each on the MIT tech flea market and I have 2940s from back then so there.

The only "problem" I have is that I bought the DVD edition of Silent Hunter 3 which of course doesn't play nice with this. I didn't see they have a digital download :mad:
 
My setup is similar to the one you plan on getting for exactly the same reasons but I have a mix of SCSI & SATA hard drives and 4 optical IDE ones.
I keep games and/or music CD's in two drives, DvD's in one & use the DVD-Ram drive for back up.
Keeps disk changing to a minimum doing it that way.

Thanks guys, sounds like a plan.

My only concern left is my 350 watt PSU. It is a really high quality one however, Fortron. I really dont think I will have a problem sense I wont be useing more drives at once than I have in my current setup. But I will need to get a couple Y adapters however.

I think you'll be fine with Y splitters, heres what I was using on a Smartpower350W - which is one of the crappier Antec PSUs:

3 36GB Fujitsu 10K SCSI
2 DVD, 2 DVDRW
P4 2.66B
4 case fans
Ti4200, and a few PCI cards.

Even though its only a SmartPower - it worked pretty well, no foul ups. I occassionally got a spike in voltage though, but I think its that one of the regulators in the PSU's about to crap out. However, I discovered that a year ago, and it's still fine so far. I'd imagine that your Fortron power supply should be a bit sturdier than mine.
