My sister gave me her old emachines along with the 17" LCD that she had. I was going to use the desktop as a server type machine, but after setting up the third monitor on my desk, I now want 3 displays running on one system. My PCI-E slot is already being used by a 9800gt. Would just a standard PCI video card suffice? The monitor will be pushing 1280x1024 on vga.

I plan on using it for video playback mostly as well as reference when doing school work and web design practice. No gaming.

i hear that vista only supports a single video driver (cant mix nvidia with ati or nvidia with nvidia legacy...). So keep that in mind.

You heard wrong. Mixed video cards willl work with Vista, you just get Aero Basic eye candy, you do not get Aero Glass.

Can either of you prove your claim's? AFAIK ATI and Nvidia cards do not work at all together in a Vista system, not the case with 7 though.

I've actually used Matrox and ATI cards together, and they work fine, Vista Aero Basic, no Aero Glass.
