Run Dual PSU?

I used extreme PSU calculator v1.3 and calculated the total wattage I would need

then, using Howard' [on Anandtech] formula came up with the amperage

According to Silent PC Review - Power Distribution within Six PCs, a modern PC can use up to 90% of its power from the +12V rail(s) (older PCs will require a higher fraction from +5V). With this in mind, we can calculate the kind of power we actually need - i.e. how much current we need from the +12V rails. We're not interested in the currents the other rails can supply, because only a small portion of the total power is not drawn from the +12V rails.

Step 2) Multiply the power required (xxx watts) by 0.9 (which gives you 90%).

Step 3) Since the number is still in watts, divide by 12 (the voltage) to find current (amperes).

This number is the number of amps you need when your PC is running at full blast.

so I do this, extreme psu calculator gives me a total of 945 watts
90% of that is 850.5 watts
divided by 12 is 70.875 amps

I dont really feel like spending 400-500 on a power supply so I was wondering if I could use 2 Enermax Liberty 620s instead...

What system are you putting it in that will need that much power ?

My system is a dual Opteron 250's, Tyan K8W, 8 gigs of memory, 6800GT vid, 4 raptors, 4 Dvd drives, 10 case fans.
That only pulls 360 watts from the wall.

So to pull well over double that means it must be good.

Luck.................... :D

I seriously doubt you need anywhere near that power. Use the calculator and info in the sticky above here. The extreme calculator is not that good a guesstimate.

I'm looking to get

DFI LANPARTY UT NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT
AMD ATHLON64 X2 4800+ OC as high as I can get it on air
2x OCZ DDR PC-4000 GOLD GX XTC 2GB DUAL CHANNEL
6x WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR 500GB SATAII
2x WESTERN DIGITAL RAPTOR 74GB SATA
2x EVGA E-GEFORCE 7900GT CO SUPERCLOCKED
4x PANAFLO 120MM
4X COOLERMASTER 120MM LED
BFG PHYSX AGEIA PPU PCI 128MB
LG 16X BLACK DVD-ROM
BENQ LIGHTSCRIBE DVD+- BLACK

I was thinking I could run the fans , accessories and the caviars off the second power supply and everything else off the first

I really don't get the appeal of having 8 hard drives in your main system, which is what i assume this is. Why don't you build a seperate file server and toss it on your network?

the PC Power 510 Turbo Cools will power all that... Just remember to get the 510-ASL not the 510-SLI as it has the 24pin/8pin vs the SLI version's 24/4

I have an SLI-DR, Opty 148, 2gb, 9 Hard Drives, 2 Opticals, 12v Pump, LCD Bay Device, 3 120mm Fans, 1 92mm fan, dual 7900gtx's running off one without any issues.

the 750GiB drives are hugely expensive (even for their capacity)
shrug as to why in primary system. Of course, I have 900GiB on my primary PC, so whatever.

Just 360W? Really?
I've been looking to build a new pc, with 12 HDs, minimally a dual core or better, and something like a Radeon X1900 AIW, and always-on. I've been waiting for Conroe to start the process (and hope that I can get more HD space for the same money). I had as target, that my machine would not pull more than 300W from the socket, running on 110V.
Should I wait, or should I procedd and buy some TYAN today?
