Rumours: Apple No Longer Intel-Inside Only?

They would be shooting themselves in the foot. One of the big pros a Mac has now that they use intel chips is they can dual boot windows. Loosing intel's performance and that capability by designing an in house chip would be about the dumbest move Apple has ever made. They could go with AMD but I dont see that happening either considering AMD has nothing to compare in terms of performance and probably couldnt even keep up with volume.

QFT. are they going to start putting Via chips or Cyrix chips in their systems? Intel is now the world's leading CPU manufacturer. They would be crippling themselves if they shut the door on intel.

I want to know what the advantage would be going away from intel as all 3 options(internal, amd, via) are pretty far fetched.

The AMD one is the only one that would make any real sence. Thing is apple runs a large profit margin compaired to others and their system prices are not as much of a concern for them compaired to makers like dell. Unless amd has something killer it is hiding I don't really see them switching.

Lol does Apple know what kind of slippery slope they're about to enter?
Alternatives to their current 100% Intel platform? That's room for instability, bugs, and the typical stuff that PC users enjoy b/c of the broad hardware support inherent with PCs.

Apples biggest strength (and my biggest complaint)...and they're trying to break away from it? Hmm...

I don't think they will go to someone else for the CPU, sounds more like the motherboards they may switch from...

O and boy Intel makes the best motherboards right? Always the best :D Right ;)

Cmon we all know and love Intel CPUs but I have never, and never plan on owning a true intel motherboard, maybe intel chipsets, but not "made my intel" mother boards.

Did you all read the article? Thats what it seemed like it was saying. Moving from intel raid/audio/video.

In my mind, brilliant move. But hey, I don't like apple, cause I like to build my own and have options.... So take my opinion FWIW

I don't think Apple wants to spoil their good relationship with Intel any time soon.

Apple does not have the capability to produce a processor that could possibly compete with Intel's models from a performance standpoint. AMD's current lineup is also not able to match up to Intel's. There is no way in hell that Apple is going away from Intel any time soon, as there simply is not a better alternative at this point.

I think that Apple should use AMD platform for their Macbooks. AMD has a much better IGP than Intel's X3100 eventhough their CPUs are a little slower. With AMD, the platform would be more balanced than Intel's fast CPU and their below par IGP.

If Apple is looking for a new laptop-type chipset (which are also used in Apple desktops), it will probably choose nvidia.

Apple is not going to use AMD CPUs. Even VIA has a better chance right now with Nano if Apple if going to make a netbook. The article is based on "blog buzz" anyways, so it's just a retread of theinq, the source of the rumor.

The final 1/3 of the article is the only part worth reading. I'll suspect this is just a ploy by Apple to negotiate better pricing. May be they aren't completely happy with the IGP and so look at that as an opportunity to pressure Intel.

I think it is possible that Apple would consider to use an AMD CPU for their products, it is not like they never used something different before. Before this they were using Power PC CPU for their products. Compared to Intel and AMD, IBM Power PC is not really well known but people would still buy Apple products. Based on this, I think that Apple could still sell well even if they go cheaper with an AMD Platform eventhough the CPU is slower but the platform is actually better.

Edit: PC perspective have an article on this and they are putting their bet on nVidia

Apple switched to Intel because Intel's chips at the time were much better than the PowerPC chips available. They switched to PPC from Motorola chips in the first place because at the time PowerPC was much faster than anything else. Switching to AMD chips would give them absolutely no speed advantage and only a minimal pricing advantage, which wouldn't be worth it in the least for them because they'd have to redesign all of their motherboards.

AMD has a much better IGP for the graphic performance and Apple is "well known" for graphic design. AMD processor is also not much slower than Intel processor because we are talking about stock speed here since an Apple computer is not designed for overclocking. They could also use a triple core Phenom which coould be made to look like an "upgrade" in the marketing department.

I think that Apple know very well what they are doing, maybe they have tested deneb (next phenom) and seen how it performs

The only possible thing I could see change is perhaps they go with Nvidia motherboards with Integrated graphics. That way they can keep intel chips and have a better graphics solution than Intel's in laptops.

Sounds like unqualified speculation to me. Just cause it ain't on Fud don't mean its not Fud!

I think using the Nvidia MCP79 would be a great idea for the MacBook and MacBook Pro. It would give the MacBook much better integrated graphics, and allot the MBP to have a Hybrid SLI along with a Discrete GPU say the 9600GT or something.

anyone consider that they might go with an AMD/ATI chipset to run with Intel processors?

I don't know whether AMD still have the license to make a new chipset for Intel CPU or not but there are still notebooks out there with an older ATI chipset.

Apple might go with nVidia but if AMD can still make a chipset for Intel CPU, the logical explaination for the lack of newer AMD chipset for Intel CPU could be that Apple don't want AMD to sell the chipset to other vendors just yet.

It's x86, that's all that matters.

Apple did not switch from Power PC cpu's to Intel based on pure performance alone. Most of the decision was based on the ability to use dual core cpus with low power draw / low heat for their laptops. IBM couldn't develop the chip quick enough to meet those specific standards and basically lost the contract.

do you think the average Apple consumer cares or even KNOWs what CPU is in their system, all they see is "2.2Ghz wow it is fast!"

didnt NVIDIA admit to dropping out of the chipset buisness, so i doubt they will be doing that and after the past fiasco, Apple would be brave to try to go with NVIDIA based graphics solutions...

If Apple produced their own shitty CPUs, all the average consumers would be saying "wow, this is slow!" Hence why they're sticking with Intel, and unless a better alternative shows up in the future, they have no reason to switch.

nVidia is not dropping out of the chipset business.

Apple doesn't "produce" anything. They are a marketing company, everything is outsourced. Foxconn makes most of their stuff, and a large portion of their computers. And anyone who thinks Apple is capable of suddenly springing open a fab to start developing and manufacturing their own in-house CPU is a crackpot.

No.

And what's brave about it ? What's your logic here ? Because there were flaws in some mobile chips in the last generation, there will be flaws in every other chip they make ?

People keep thinking that AMD would be a better option, but they keep forgetting about something very important: Intel.

They will make sure that Apple keeps using their processors, but Intel has absolutely nothing good in terms of IGPs, while NVIDIA does. So it makes perfect sense for Apple to go with NVIDIA, while keeping Intel's CPUs. In the end, we'll see...

The X4500 IGP is fine for integrated video, but Apple is going for GPGPU (OpenCL) in the next OS version, 10.6. Intel doesn't support general programmability with its IGPs, but nvidia does with the GF8200 IGP. That's probably the main reason.

Unfortunately for Intel, the X4500 is the last chipset-based IGP. Future integrated graphics will come on the CPU. Pineview (system on a chip) is around 9 months away, and it's Atom-based and still probably not generally programmable. Auburndale (Nehalem-based) with an integrated CPU is a little more than a year away. Apple has little choice which IGP to use if it wants OpenCL support in the meantime for lower cost, mainstream systems. Not all systems will come with a discrete GPU, even for the prices Apple charges. ;)

The only reason I can see apple picking up AMD is because AMD could deliver an entire platform. They could give them AMD CPU's and Chipsets and ATi videocards and if you didn't want discrete the 790GX's IGP is the best out there. I don't see this happening at all though.

It could potentially be very good for AMD but like I said I don't really see it happening unless deneb does wonders.

Apple recently purchased a semiconductor company, and there are rumours that they plan on producing their own CPUs. That's what I was referring to.

Wow, this was kind of unexpected, a new beefy IGP from nvidia:

Steve Jobs said:
"We also have some new graphics for notebooks. Nvidia came to us many months ago and talked to us about an amazing graphics part they wanted to build, that would combine the chipset and an extremely powerful embedded graphics processor, all in one part, for a desktop computer. And we said, 'This is fantastic, but we'd like to use it in a notebook. Can we work together on this?' And we've worked with them and... it's really great. It's the Nvidia GeForce 9400M. It's an amazing chip. It combines the Chipset and GPU on one die. 70 percent of the die area is the GPU. There are 16 parallel graphics cores on it, and they deliver 54 gigaflops of graphics performance. So this thing's a stunner in performance. And in our tests we've found it's up to five times faster than integrated graphics." Slide showing performance: 2.8x in World of Warcraft, up to 6.2X for Call of Duty.
I hope that's available to other manufacturers.

All nvidia has said is that they are not making a CPU. Because they would get sued.
