Rumor: Nvidia Kepler Before Xmas

IIRC Microsoft might release DX 11.1 with Windows 8. So nothing spectacular coming from that direction.

Kepler before Christmas will made from plywood and wood screws and filled with sawdust. It's going to be magical. :)

I'll speak my opinion about DirectX 11/12 and so forth.

I for one am glad that a new Windows OS is not coming out with a new DX version. Yep, I am, and I'm not insane. Sounds weird I know, but it makes sense. I think one problem with developer adoption of the latest DX standards is the fact that it keeps evolving too fast and they don't have time to fully take advantage of a given DX version at a given time. They are too busy thinking about the next one, or having to have that 1 feature to exploit the next version, to put themselves in the spot light, instead of focusing on what is there now and really fleshing it out. Or worried about jumping on a moving target.

With DX9, it was there so long, and look now how many DX9 games there are. It seems DX9 is finally near or at its peak usage, years later. It took THAT long for DX9 to get exploited. Think how long it may take for DX11. If the next DX version was coming out next year, DX11 games would never get their chance in the light. So I for one like the fact that DX11 is getting some time to marinate. This means developers can grab onto a standard that will remain the standard for a little while, and not be afraid to adopt DX11. They can finally put DX9 aside, and move to DX11 knowing that it will remain.

So I say good that DX12 is not coming out with Windows 8, good indeed. Let DX11 get its time in the spotlight and exploited to its full potential before we move on to the next.

*dances around the office shouting DX11 FTW*

I'm happy with lack of DX change too. DX10 was a joke , DX11 was slightly less of a joke and isn't even reasonably used in games today.

Now when DX11 is used in PS4/next xbox it will change. So I'm fine with it staying that way.

All I want is more processing power at less watts.

I agree, but for a different reason. I don't want DX12 tied to a specific OS. I would like it to be downloadable for Vista on up.

DirectX 11 wasn't tied to Win7. It was released separately, and can be installed on Vista. It's update KB971512 (which, amusingly, does not refer to itself in any way as being DirectX 11), and requires Vista SP2 and the latest DirectX Redistributable. DX11.1 shouldn't be any different.

When I look around for info on DirectX 12, it all seems to be non-MS speculation and a whole bunch of assumptions that it would be part of Windows 8 - all of which are now proven to be wrong. I can't even find any reason to believe that DirectX 12 is now or ever was in development.

DX10 was tied to Vista which was a turd (at the time) and no one wanted to leave XP.

Can't wait to see what the next generation of video cards will bring to the table though. We've been pretty spoiled the last few years, gaming at 2560x1600 on mainstream video cards sometimes ;)

Yeah, at 2560x1600 or eyefinity/surround resolutions it changes :D. I can think of a few challenging titles coming, and some still today, that I'd like more horsepower for at 2560x1600 myself. Chief amongst those is BF3, of course :p.

I'm running @ 2560x1600, and other than having MSAA off, BF3 runs perfectly for me. Perhaps I could get a bit higher of a minimum frame rate, but I don't see that much value in upgrading at this point. Now eyefinity of course is something altogether different. Looking at the FPS [H] was able to get in the MARS II review with the quad-SLI and quad-fire...drool.

I can suffer on an older AMD/NVIDIA card I have lying around until either the fire sale or buy me a shiny new Kepler.

Any word on whether Kepler will bring improved power consumption? Especially idle consumption.

If yes, I may wait for Kepler. If no, I may grab a 580 during the fire-sale.
There will be NO fire-sale~! Nvidia's business is booming, they are not closing shop. The amazing savings mentioned involves something along the line of bundling a card with BF3 and maybe a 10% drop.

It would be great though for the top Kepler card to come out under $500. Yeah, a man can dream.

I am just wanting to see what the 600 brings. If they dont have triple monitor on a single card I wont be able to justify buying one and will be stuck with ATI.

I'd believe that nvidia would try to paper launch first. With the recent AMD layoffs and consumer confidence at a low right now for AMD, it would be the perfect timing to steal AMD's 7xxx series thunder. Nvidia has show in the past that they're completely willing to "launch" a product that can't ship in quantity for months, I wouldn't be surprised to see them do it again.

well, amd has done the same thing, so it's anything goes on the graphics market :)

Here's actually what Microsoft will bring with DX 11.1 for those who are interested. It's of course preliminary only. Mostly stuff that helps developers utilize the GPUs better than before, rather than new effects like tessellation. This is actually very welcome, since at the moment PC games are horribly optimized and you need incredible amounts of raw processing power compared to consoles. The problem with PC ports these days is that we're still in DX9 world and developers have to carry the baggage that comes with it. When games start doing DX11 only we'll get games that will perform much better.

I really doubt that the new Nvidia GPU's are going to be launched this year. We haven't heard very much about them really, and it just seems a bit rushed. That and I HOPE that AMD gets theirs out first. They really need the boost in confidence and money right now. Would hate to see them suffer more and possibly go under.

Kitguru has said a lot of things that have no bearing on reality. You shouldn't take their news as truth. They do decent articles, but the news section is just filled with baseless speculation that lacks any common sense. Kepler coming this year is one of them, since Nvidia has already stated they won't even start producing Kepler this year besides engineering samples. At best we'll get a similar show Nvidia did with Fermi.
