I picked up a busted xbox 360 to fix and need some tips from the pros. Initially it just need a new AV cable and it would run, occasionally needed to be rebooted to get rid of the red ring.

Finally when it would only boot to RR I cracked it open and did the X-Clamp fix, however it has not affected the situation - I remain with 3 flashing reds laughing at me

Other than reflowing (which I'd do but its much more complex than I have the tools for at this time), are there any options available to me you have heard of and/or tried yourselves?

thanks for the help!

Open it up and double check to make sure that you've cleaned off all the old, crappy thermal paste. Make sure you applied it good.

Double check to make sure the coolers are making good contact with the processors.

If all looks good, pull the fan out but leave it connected to the motherboard. Put it back together (without the case), but rest the fan on top of the DVD drive. Make sure the fan isn't blowing on the coolers.

Power it on and let it run for 20-30 minutes or until it overheats. Now pull it back apart and see if you can tighten the screws on your xclamp fix anymore (not overly tight, though). Now put the fan back in and see if it runs for you.

You are un-professionaly re-flowing the soldier. Assuming it's not too bad, this should recover it (IF it is the problem)

If you're prepared to reflow, sounds like you know exactly what you're doing...

honestly If I was a 360 owner I'd crack open a hole saw and get some 12CM fans on the side panel.

but it also seems like the problem might be in more than just heat; you might look into ghetto modding the actual HS rigging, because I hear thats half the problem:

seems to me the heatsink itself has enough to keep some serious heat wattage at a 40C delta, but the way its mounted to the PCB seems to be a cause for concern.

i had to chuckle at them calling a lock washer a 'spring' washer

Do you know which error it is throwing, I bought one which I though was just a hsf job but it turned out to be an e74 error, which can be multiple things and generally not related to the main hsf

I do not know the specific error code, once it went three reds it has been dead since.
