Ok, well I have one room that doesn't get a signal from my router but it has a cat5 cable going from the router to that room. And I was wondering if there was anything I needed to do so I could connect another router to that cable and using my laptop in the room without a signal to connect to the new router? Currently using a wnr3500.
 
its very simple. all you need to do is connect the cable to a second router. if you want it to all function as single network, then you will need to set it to a gateway instead of a router, but if you dont care about accessing files on pcs connected to the first router, then just plug and play. second router will give you internet access.
 
just get a 10/100 switch.. plug the cat 5 cable into that.. then plug all the computers in the room into the switch... then your problems solved..
 
router = switch +dhcp management, turn off the dhcp, and its one and that same. if you care about seeing the other pc's go from router 1's lan port to router 2's lan port and disable dhcp, if you dont care about seeing the other pcs files you can use router 2's wan port however this is generally not reccommend, however, it will keep other people on the network from seeing your pc.

people say it isnt supposed to work but i have never had any issues with this method (ruoter 1 lan to router 2 wan that is) (as long as you dont care about file sharing) no need to buy a cross over cable or any thing, just decide if you want priviacy or the ability to share both methods will give you initernet access.

befor someone gets all snippy i know routers can have firewalls, DMZ zones prot fowarding, but for his needs al that really matters is dhcp
 
Thanks everyone. Just wanted to see how much of a head ache it might cause me before I shell out the money to buy a new router which I guess I will.

Switches are generally cheaper, and thats all you really need (a switch).
