router/server build

hello

im trying to build a router myself and am looking into flex-atx form factor, i live in the uk.
Here we have both A/DSL 2+ as well as cable broadband. (plus mobile broadband dongles)

Also we have satellite and cable tv.

I am hoping to combine all this into a small computer to use as a router. (file storage we be added by a NAS box via CAT5)

so,

i need the following,

1, adsl modem built in
2, cable broadband card
3, satellite card
4, usb or mini-pci mobile broadband dongle
5, SSD card for OS and BOOT
6, 320gb hdd for Bit torrent files and other downloads
7, ariel tv card digital Tv aswell as FM radio stations


my question really is can has anyone built anything similar and what software options
are there, i hope to use laptop memory and maybe usb flash drive to boot from ( load everything to ram)

does this seem like a good idea, or am i taking this project too far?, i just want to be able to handle my downloads somewhere else and stream tv,radio.

Also, since upload speeds are not great here 1mb up is normal i wouldnt mind trying to use "load balancing", where two or more internet connections are joined together as one connection.

any feedback would be great

Wait wait, so you now have/subscribe to DSL and Cable internet for your home right now? And you also have/subscribe to Satellite and Cable TV for your home right now?

And you want to combine all four (maybe 3 depending on how the cable is setup) into one box? I don't think that's possible man. At most you can probably combine the cable TV with the router if your cable TV service allows for the option of a cable card.

NO no,, the DSL is 8meg and the cable is 2meg, together really would get 6meg at best.

satellite is FREE sat, or FREE to AIR, but it would be nice to have a extra dish! becuase if you point it the other way you get more channels

the cable tv, is basic pack, i can do without it but if i move to a new home then id like the option to switch agen.

you can buy cable cards, i hear they allow it, you just have to plug your "credit card thing they give you in the back"

anyway, here in the uk some homes have cable and some have satellite but those lucky ones get both!

note: the plan to use mobile broadbands is if the internet ever cuts out i can still get online!

note: cable modems are given to us when we buy monthly broadband, they just connect into a spare network slot or even usb

I have both DSL and cable broadband, as well as free over the air satellite and also cable tv.

i believe there are options for pci slot, cable tv cards, with smart card options


the cable modem i have connects to the coax cable, then to the pc by usb OR network slot

Yeah your plan just isn't possible. While each of those individual features will work and are totally possible to setup, the fact that you' want to combine all 3-4 functions together just introduces too many compatibility and setup issues.

Simply put, keep the router separate from the TV server aspect. It simply won't work otherwise. Let us know if you're fine with that and we can continue on with a serperate rotuer and server build.

You're definitely not getting rid of that cable modem. AFAIK, most ISPs won't let you turn a PC into a modem. So you're stuck with that cable modem. Same goes for the DSL modem as well. However there are ways to use both in a load balancing situation as you mentioned earlier. However, from the quick research I've done, it looks like you're gonna have to use Linux or Cisco routers/hardware to do the job.
