Hello

My friend tells me that if I add a descent switch to my WRT54G router I will get better performance. The router is a version 3 Is this true? I have 3 computers running off a 5 meg connection mostly just gaming

I can't really think of what difference it would make, but maybe it would have an effect in certain setups in certain situations. But I doubt it would be noticeable.

Why don't you ask your friend what he's talking about exactly, instead of ripping on me for thinking about your question, doing a few searches on google to double check my answer, and then posting an answer for you. :(
 
if anything i think it would slow down performance eh? its one more piece of hardware for the signal to go through.
 
Better performance for what?

The WAN (Internet) hardware in the WRT54G maxes out at ~21Mbps NAT, but that doesn't affect you since you've only got 5Mbps Internet.

The integrated 10/100Mbps switch in the WRT54G maxes out at about ~70Mbps, while some other routers will do close to 90Mbps. In other words, the Linksys will support LAN file copies of less than 9 megabytes per second, while other routers will do more than 11.

If you have gigabit NICs in your PCs, then you would see a benefit to adding a gigabit switch like the Netgear GS608. With such a switch, you could transfer files over the network at 35 megabytes per second.
 
Yeah the gigabit switch for fast file transfers makes sense (only if you have gigabit NIC's of course). But since he only mentioned gaming I assumed (dangerous, I know), he was talking about online gaming performance.
 
For internet performance...a "decent" switch will not give you any performance gain...only for LAN transfers (local).
 
Thanks now that answers my question. I do have Gig NIC's but I am really looking for gaming performance and I couldn't see how a switch would help but you never know. My friend couldnt explain how it would make better just that it would.. So I think he was half right it would increase performance but only on local transfers wich I really dont care about

If your friend can't explain why it improves gaming performance, he's the giving some bull. You're probably better off seeking and researching your answers if someone can't explain it. I guess that's why you posted the question. But as everyone explained, it will not make a damn on the internet, only the connectivity on your GIG switch, the connection to the router would still remain 100Mbs.
