Router help

Hey guys, how's it going? I trust your holidays are going well.

I've had a D-Link DGL-4300 for the past four years now (at least) and in the past month, the WiFi signal it sends out just isn't 'good'. What I mean is, the first time this happened in November, one day all the WiFi enabled devices in my home were connecting just fine. Then quite literally the next day, each device detected a signal in the area, yet they simply couldn't connect. I've refreshed each device (iPhone, laptops, consoles) yet they cannot actually connect to the network even though they pick up the signal.

At first I reset the router and that seemed to work, but only for a day or two before the problem started up again. So then I upgraded to the last (and latest) firmware D-Link has on their site and it looked like the problem was solved for good. But unfortunately, this has started again in the last couple of days. D-Link doesn't provide any tech support for my router because it was discontinued in 2009 so I'm stuck.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Chances are you just need to bite the bullet and get a new router, these things deteriorate over time.

If you really want to try to get it fixed, I'd suggest completely unplugging it, power and everything, using an air can to blow out all the dust that's bound to be clogged in there, then plugging it back in, resetting to factory default. My old router was like that too, would work perfectly fine for a week or two, then become really really slow, requiring a hard reset. Eventually got tired of it, got a new router, no more problems.

I've seen this happen a few times where a neighbor switches out their router or reconfigures it on the same channel that your router is operating on. Try changing your channel to 1, 6, or 11 and see if one of them gets your signal ramped back up.

Tsuyoi, I did what you said and that seems to have fixed it for the moment. If it happens again, then for sure I'll buy a new one.

Protoform-X, how does one go about that process?

On the admin interface page. The same place I'm sure you setup your WiFi security as well.

Yep yep. Should just be a Channel drop down box with channels 1 through 11 available. 1, 6, and 11 don't overlap on frequency, so those are the recommended channels.

I favor the router channel conflict theory, and if so, you could still run into the same problem. Your new router could have some better channel choices and if lucky be smart enough to hop channels if it detects a problem.

Good Luck! B)
