Router functions dropped from PS3 spec

Sony knows the PS3 will still sell like hot cakes without that added fluff and also I think the only reason the PS3 will not have a HD is because the memory card proved so vital to the PS1 and 2 and with a HD almost no one will buy one and I bet Sony made a good chunk back from losses with the memory card. It probaly cost $2 to make and sold for $20 and I bet the PS3 uses a different type of memory card so users have to buy it once again. I wouldnt be surprised if some other things are cut.

....like that.

EGM says that both the console and controller are not final designs. Personaly I think the PS3 is that ugliest of all the next gen console and looks like a bread holder or whatever that thing is with the sliding door that you keep bread in. :p

well...you're problably not going to be too happy with the leaked PS4 drawings.

my hands ache when I hold them in the position you would need to , to contrort yourself to that freakishly curved micro sized controller. I'll have to hold it to know for sure, but it looks like playstation controller 3.0 isn't for me.

Didn't Sony drop the firewire port (among other things) off the PS2 in later revisons? I guess they figured that no one needed it and wanted to save some money. Same thing here. Sony should also get rid of all those useless memory card slots shown at E3.

With regards to a built in HDD, MS is smart to include one because that is the only way it will ever get used. The bundle idea is bad for a couple reasons. Retailers will advertise the base price of the PS3 and have some small print saying you must buy a HDD. What happens if some store sells the PS3 without a HDD in order to appear cheaper than everyone else? Customers will have to deal with pushy sales people trying to convince them that they NEED that 100+ gig HDD, sort of how it is with A/V cables and whatnot. 9/10 people will only use the PS3 for games and don't give crap about all these other features.

You're still not making sense. If they have PS3 + packages with different size HD's, the larger the HD the more expensive the package. You're still gonna be paying for it if they do it that way, which i highly doubt.

Correct, the larger the HDD, the more expensive the packages would be. The point here is that the consumer would have some manner of choice and price control. All this "PS3 costs $400 LOL" crap wouldn't matter, because a PS3 buyer could save a few dozen bucks by going with a smaller HDD size. That's the entire point.

Actually Aandtech article came to that conclusion about both the PS3 and the triple proc in the Xbox360, stating that if either company went with X2s or Pentium D's they'd of been much more powerful. And i do know something about programming, you do not want to fuck with a 6 threaded program or even a 3 threaded one. Its an amazing pain in the ass. We'll see realistically, games for the console using 1 or 2 of the cells processors so developers arent "developing" games into the next century. It boggles my mind why either company had to incooperate multi-core processors into these systems. The Xbox runs of a 733 Celeron and the PS2 was some amazing peice of crap at something like 300mhz. They did not need to boast this BS when im positive a nice 3.0 pentium or equivilant AMD would of done wonders, been easier to code for, and quite possibly would of been faster.

One word: middleware.

Anandtech's article got yanked. Generally, people don't cite retracted articles when arguing a point.

Steve Jobs is problably an idiot too though right? Im sure Cell will pump 1 bajiliion teraflops

No, Steve Jobs just isn't interested in a processor not built for general purpose computing. I'm starting to doubt those "programming knowledge" credentials you flashed around in your previous paragraph.

What in the heck are you talking about? Man, go look at the E3 vid for the PS2, NOTICE THE POLY COUNT THEY BRAG, then look at its realistic performance, its no where near what they said! They lie, just like microsoft!

I have a suggestion. Instead of relying on your memory of five-year-old demo videos, why don't you rewatch them, then compare them to what your PS2 games look like. I think you'll be surprised. I was.

I actually wouldnt be surprised to see sony sell the console for $249 if the xbox 360 is $299. What they wouldnt tell you is you have to buy a hard drive for it to work. Everyone would rush out and buy the console for $249 thinking it is cheaper then the Xbox 360 and then realize they have to buy a hard drive and go spend another $50-150 on a hard drive . IMO that it absolute brilliance. Of coarse sony would lose a lot of money but they would make it up in market share latter on.

Anyways I completely forgot how much xbox 360 is retailing for. Dont remember if it was 299 or 399. Anyone know?

If the HD has a practical use, believe me people will buy it. HD Loader still hasn't reached 100% compatibility with the PS2's library, but people have spent the money to get a hard drive installed because the difference in load times is just incomparable. Of course if it'll just be a giant memory card then it's no good to anyone.

The reason it has no practical use on the PS is because it did not ship with it and I think it will be the same thing for the PS3 unless its like $30. The XBox shipped with it and it added greatly to the system and is the probaly the main reason the MS is now contender. You can put your music on it, download new levels for games, no need at all to to delete any saved game and all that will be expanded with the 360 with all the crap MS says they have planned for it.

shipping with out a HDD makes it akin to programming for PC games, you have now have to program for the lowest and highest common denominator.

Shipping without one is dumb these days.

And as far as I know, the investor estimates for the retail price of the PS3 were calculated withOUT a hdd.

Cell is proving to be pretty weak and a nightmare to realistically code for anymore then 2 of the processors. Problem is you believed the hype. Go watch the PS2 launch video from E3 and realize that Sony lies.

This coming from the biggest BS slinger on the board. Many developers have already come out saying that the PS3 is easier to code for than the PS2. Sony even stated that one of their goals was to make it easier to program on. The recent dev kits are IBM PC's running 6800 SLI setups on Linux. This is a standard enough platform to code on using OpenGL and NVIDIA's CG shader programming.

I'm sure when the Xbox2 comes out you will drill a hole in it so that you can enjoy it in ways that many would find offensive. Take your FUD somewhere else Elmer.

You've got a habit of coming up with extremely distorted HDD prices. Give it a rest.

They're still an analyst's guess. I'll believe $399 when I see it. $350, maybe, and I only believe that because of the launch price of the PSX way back in 1994.

I would bet on seeing no less then $350 for the PS3. More than likely they will sell it in forced bundles.

no harddrive is a bad idea (as mentioned by people more articulate than I), and I also dont care about routers. an ethernet port though, is a necessity. the price difference nowadays between 100mbit and gigabit should be minimal....who buys 100mbit stuff anymore? corps installing dumb terminals>
