Router causing massive slowdown?

When I connect directly to my cable modem, I'm getting about 2mbit down (2000kb/s). When I connect through my router, my speed drops to about 700kb/s. What gives?
 
I take it you have reset the router?
Is the router configurable?
 
You might have an older router?
Outdated firmware on the router?
Router might not be properly configured, MTU set correctly?
 
I have an Asus WL-500W with the latest version of DD-WRT on it. I must have some settings wrong. What should I look for? I can configure just about anything with DD-WRT. I have a hard time believing that the throughput of this router is capped at 720kb/s.
 
Is QOS accidentally enabled, and set to the wrong settings?
has it always been like this?
and after dd-wrt flashing, did you do a full hard reset?
 
Ack, I turned QoS off and that has helped quite a bit. MTU is set to Auto right now, should I change it to Manual? If so, what should I set it at?
 
QoS is very helpful. It'll help shape traffic so the most important stuff gets through. But it will need correct settings. Google a guide, and it'll help you determine the settings pretty quickly.
I belive the download/upload speeds should be 85%-90% of your actual speed. Then you need to set priorities for each port/app that you use.
For example most people set BitTorrent to low/bulk, and set skype to high.
