Could you imagine using a round LCD for anything other than decoration? Cool technology behind the design but not very practical. Thanks to Edward C. for the linkage.

Based on the low-temperature poly-Si (p-Si) TFT LCD panel technology, the company succeeded in simultaneously forming the display block and the peripheral drive circuit and thereby enabled the product to have an arbitrary shape.

Wow, I wonder how the resolution would work..

(haven't read article yet)

Edit: Looks pretty neat...I just wonder what kind of crazy shapes they will come up with since they said that it could be basically made into any shape.

There would have to be drivers made for each unit because I highly doubt that any PC vid card would work with those crazy resolutions.

You seem to forget that the Enterprise NCC-1701 had round psychodelic displays. It's the wave of the future man!

When you think about it, we have a wide oval range of view. So that could be a more natural monitor.

I can see these being used in embedded devices, but not as a monitor replacement.

I can see some interesting embedded applications, from cellphones to mp3 players. As for a desktop monitor, I could see a use. Think of the monitor as you would a skin for your media player (like Winamp). Applications or OS could utilize the area to display toolbars, media controls, always accessible areas of the desktop, etc.. Vista sidebar on steroids. The bottom could be much like the [apple] launch bar. The traditional monitor estate would still exist inside the perimeter only you would have additional footage. It would pry be the next best thing to dual monitors for productivity. Imagine the gaming, FPS shooters that look down sites would feel right at home! LOL I honestly don't see any issues with gaming unless it was designed to be square (side scroller perhaps). If you had a triangle monitor you may see Q'Bert make a come-back! ROFL!!

Sun glasses... now you can take your pr0n litterally everywhere you go...

crap, this thing is perfect for a Mod I've got in the works... sadly though by the time this thing hits retail channels the rest of the 'chasis' will be long since degraded/put to another use...

The latest panel features an RGB horizontal stripe array with 240 (H) x 240 (V) pixels (along the longest lines)

its really just a circle cut out of a normal lcd.

I could see this technology being used in automotive applications, starting with the gauge cluster.

You read the linked article (where they mentioned that application)? :p Seriously though this isn't the first round one. Another LCD supplier already has a round display (very similar to the one pictured) that will show up in an automotive cluster soon. The pixels are square on the display.

ohhh. How about making some 22" wheels with a big round (weatherproof) LCD in the center.......I've just invented something more ridiculous than spinners.:p

You know, posting the number of that particular Enterprise really makes you appear to be a geek.

This would actually work very well if you incorporated a camera pointing at the user and displayed their face on the LCD. If would be just like a makeup mirror only several hundred dollars more.
