Who has bought the Seagate Barracuda 750s so far? Did you like them? Any regret? How's the performance?

I'm thinking of buying two for the RAID0 array in my database server, and moving two of the other drives (300's, I think) into a new server. $800 (plus a new controller--for the other server to handle SATA) is just a bit beyond my comfort level.
 
All I know is that some guy in the FS/FT forums was selling his for $375 a pop. New oem.

There are some "hd tach" screenshots on the SR forums and Anandtech has a "review". I was this || close to buying one or two, but decided against it, based on what I read at anand. Went with the WD5000YS instead.
 
Well, I haven't bought any, and I don't know of any reviews from anyone who knows left from right (or average from maximum :rolleyes: ). Viperlair reports irrelevant benchmarks with almost exactly the same scores across the board, and uses words like "significantly faster" to describe the difference between 2:30 and 2:19. Anandtech's review doesn't test anything that I'd call really relevant, their test procedure isn't very clear, and none of their graphs have units on them. TechReport's writeup has the same "all the numbers are the same!" syndrome, followed by some of the strangest test results I've seen on page 7 and 8.

In short, while I think they're fine drives, I'd personally wait on some real tests to see what they can do, and possibly see how reliability is on the new perpendicular equipment. I haven't seen any conclusive evidence that this disk has high STR or good seek times or good buffer strategy, just that they have good capacity :p

Sorry to post with no answers, but I'm somewhat frustrated by the lack of data on these. They look good in theory, but nobody's testing them.

No deal -- I'm quite happy to pay $30 more for the drive to buy it from a real shop and get support and so on.

There don't seem to be any articles about it bombing, either. The Ars article is kind of bad for read performance, but why would the drive totally take off when configured for RAID0? And, as you mention, we don't even know what the units are.

hope you'd do weekly (if not daily) backups.

RAID0 you will get 1.5TB, RAID1 you will get 750GB

send me some money too, you'll pay premium for those, 6 wk2500ks compared to the 750's would be $249.9 cheaper. Then again having 2 compared to 6 disks occupied is prob. worth the extra money.

Your analysis is incomplete.

If I buy the 750 drives, I just plug them in.

If I buy six 250 drives, I'll have to buy a new case to house them, maybe a new power supply, and certainly a new controller card. That'll quickly overcome the $250 difference in the cost of the drives.
 
^ What he said. For myself it's very expensive to be adding smaller drives, so I just go large as I can get.




The 750's are pretty nice, in fact, awesome for the space that they provide :)

So you're using some? How many? How's it going?
 
I use quite a few, but they are mainly for bulk storage (hence why space is premuim) so they never see the use that will push them to the edge.

They're on sale at NewEgg for $409 for a couple of days. When the price goes below $400, I'll probably pull the trigger and order two.
 
Just bought 12 for my new 64bit Dual Core Dual Xeon machine.. (yes, actually going to run WinXP64) RAID 10 is the current plan for my mass storage.. 15k SCSI for boot and swap.

Will start a worklog once I get enough parts to show something.. Got 12 for ~$4400 incl. shipping from Memory Labs.

I know- was just looking for a reaction while I typed up my real answer..

I do alot of technical computing for work- and the concept here is run a script at home while I'm at work all day. I have several that take upwards of 4 days to run on a 'normal' machine per revision, that if I could get down to 8-10 hours per run, would really help out production-wise.

Also, I'm coming up with new scripts every day that take up that many more resources. So that's what the horsepower is for.

Storage- I have a Canon 20D that I recently have been shooting 10GB of pics a week with on average depending on what is going on. So storage is running tight right now. Looking for a solution that will last a couple years with a more than nominal amount of redundancy- backing up terabytes of data gets tedious. Once I get the new machine up and running, I'll look into buying a DVD/CD autoloader and rigging it for quarterly backups. But that's obviously down the road.

I run MATLAB, ETABS, SAP2000, AutoCAD 2006, REVIT, VB, (max out Excel, can't wait for the next version), ACCESS, SQL, Photoshop CSII, etc. And finally, MOD- my DVD's on drives for archiving and 'movies on mounting'.

What're the pictures about? That's about 400 pictures a week in RAW mode.

So why are you using RAID 5? Two drive failures and you're offline. And it's still a single image, so anything more catastrophic and you're over.

I've never heard of a DVD autoloader that can handle 2000 DVDs. Even if you did, and you could sustain a constant 20 megs/second writing to it, it would take 370,000 seconds for a backup. That's 102 hours!

Well, they're here. I ordered from ZZF about two weeks ago, and they sent the drives in two days. But FedEx screwed up. My box went from San Jose to Portland, then back to Los Angeles, then up here to Seattle.

The drives end up at 698 GiB, so I have 1396 GiB now. I replaced the two 250 gig drives I was using for log. I'll move my data to them, then use the two 300 gig drives I was using for data as log drives.

The drives are nice; HD Tune is showing that they're getting a max of 76 megs/second through my Promise FastTrack controller card as a single disk.

I put them together in RAID0, and and get 110 MB/second, with access time of 12.8 mS.

Yay!
