Im such a wimp. I bought a 9800 pro exactly 1 year ago, and now i see an imrpovement in the new gen of cards by nearly 2 times. Its incredibly hard for me to resist a juicy 6800 GT OC rite now. My games would run crystal clear with everything max.... Oh man. I normally dont upgrade for 3 years after i buy each card. Should I? I really dont have too much money but i prolly could afford the 6800 GT at the expense of a months of car insurance LOL. But seriously, i could buy it, but it would hurt my pocket book. Should i bite my tongue and try to wait for next gen or should i just dive in and say why not and grab one?

9800 pro is a pretty decent card...if you cant spare the $$ then i would say your 9800 pro will do you just fine for a while longer.

id just wait dude...a 9800pro will last a little while longer...or what you could do is..wait 2 months and save a little here and there and then buy it in 2 months when you actually have most of the money and the prices have fallen....

My personal rule for computer hardware is that if buying it means delaying or not paying a bill then the answer is NO. The 9800pro is not exactly obsolete right now..

When do you guys estimate the new generation will get going? 6 months? 8 months? When do you think the 6800 GT's prices will fall to about 250 or 200?

If it makes u feel better, I have a 9700 pro and I'm not sweating it. :D

the 9800 pro is an excellent card. if you amtch it with an overclcoked fast system, plus oc the card itself you got yourself something on the level of an xt, maybe even more. the only thing i'm pissed about it that i paye din the high 300s when i built this comp a year ago, when teh card was very new. and now you can get it for the high 100s.

No bite your tongue. There is no reason to upgrade from a 9800 pro for some time to come. Ask yourself if the reason you want the card is because your games are un playable or you want to have a new card just because it's the cool thing to do. If it's because it's a cool thing to do then you're being screwed.

Why should he buy it while already owning a 9800pro? Give me one reason?

Because it runs games A LOT better on higher resolutions with more eye candy?

quiksilverx181 said:
:( thats why i want it, cuz eye candy and 100 fps in HL2 :([/

Is eye candy really worth 400 dollars? Aren't most candy bars 50 cents?

the gt probably wont be in the $200 range for atleast 6-8 months, but i see absolutely no reason to spend $400 on a new card when your already sporting a 9800pro

Thank you g3no for seeing the truth.

Well, wait at least tell Christmas, because the New Generation of cards will be here, current prices will drop, and you will have more money, I't seems like I rarly upgrade but alas, I had to because I was running a Geforce MX440 and all of my favorite games where running like crap. (And I wanted to see the pretty water). So I upgraded to a Geforce 6800GT, The performance difference (And Picture Quality), is really different, so my point.

The Longer you wait the more you will be amazed.

thats why im a 30yr old virgin

but seriously though the 9800p is great card

i just upgraded from a 9800-6800gt but i didnt see a big performance difference until i upgraded my cpu from athxp @ 2.3ghz to an a64 .

my point unless you have an overpriced cpu to support it your 6800gt wont look that much better then 9800p. so youll find yourself in a huge spending loop. also if your air cooling that 6800gt will be alot louder then 9800p.

just a few points for thought i picked up on the upgrade road.

Thanks, I guess ill wait until next gen to grab a new card. I know doom 3 brought my computer down to its knees and guys with 6800 GT's were doin alot better than i was with my setup. Is my comp really that big of a bottleneck?

come on man...i am expecting comedy here!

seriously, i ahd a 9800pro and upgraded to 6800GT cause i got a great deal.

it isnt necessary, and i wouldn't have done it if i had to pay $400. don't worry about it, play your games.

i kinda needed an upgrade tho, couldnt play doom 3 on high @ 1280x1024 (LCD native resolution) without occassional drops into the low 20's fps.

LOL, I did just that. Went from a 9800pro to a 6800ultra. Just because I wanted to get the best experiences and high frames at 1600x1200 with new games like Doom 3 and HL 2. But I didn't have to skip other bills to do it, which I wouldn't do. If money is a concern, then don't do it right now, wait a few months, skip a few lunches and save up the spare cash then do it. All these games still run great on the 9800 pro. And it's not like I just threw away the 9800 pro either, I built another 3 gig intel system around it with a hauppage tv tuner, dvd burner, using it's tv out to serve up stuff to my home theater where it can still be a great performer.

Or go ahead and get a 6800, ebay the 9800pro and get half the price of the 6800 back.

don't worry about the next gen cards. I'm on a 9700pro as well, playing Doom3 at 10x7 on high. And why do you want 100fps in half life? I'm sure if you can manage even 55-60fps in HL2, you won't be able to tell the difference. Bragging rights are great, but they're not always worth $400. I'd recommend sticking with the 9800 till the next gen at least.

just bought myself a Radeon 9250. It will play DooM III on my system(xp26, 1gbRAM), so I'm happy, cause if it plays DooM III it will play everything else(aka Half life 2 and RTS/MMOGs).

Save the money for later, that's what I'm doing. By the time I need an upgrade, Smithfield will be out the Door and so will R5xx/Geforce 7, and possibly some nice shit from S3 if we're lucky(cause more companies equals more fun!).

Actually i want the 100 fps more for CS:S since it helps more in that type of game, i wanna continue to be in CAL for CS when it switches to source

9800 Pros are great for overclocking.. If it has a R360 core you can bump it up to a 9800 XT (albeit at 128 ram tho), This cant be done with an R350 Core. Youd have to remove ur heatsink to read the core type on ur VPU.

Even if its a R350 you can still overclock the card considerably. Stock settings are 370/340. Mines running at 430/385 with no problems altho I do have about $35 bucks worth of added cooling on it. Arctic cooling VPU cooler and OCZ copper ram heatsinks. Using ATITool for OCing.

ALSO in a lot of games there are little tricks to getting ur pro to perform better. There are a few lines to change for Doom 3 that make a HUGE difference.

Ill find the how-to on bumping it to a 9800 XT and post it here later.

Here it is: http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=92&var2=0
It concentrates on the 256mb ram version but does have the info on doing the 128.

PS-overclock the hell out of it and if u end up killing it THEN its time to upgrade lol.

I got sick of my 9800pro sucking in all the new games. I wanted my damn eye cand and my FPS too. When Doom 3 launched and I saw how well the new gen cards we running in comparison to my 9800pro, I lost it and charged an eVGA 6800GT. So far im very happy with and don't regret a second replacing my 9800pro which has now replaced my friends FX 5200.

For me, my hobby is gaming and my games are to be run at high settings and good framerate and if that means another $430 after spending $400 on my 9800pro from a Ti4200 then so be it.

First post so don't bite my head off plz. :) I may be a hypocrite for saying this (I'm still waiting on a x800xtpe from dell...If I don't get it who cares..) but I think it's a good idea to wait... Skipping this genereation of cards means you can save up to buy something better down the road. ie: better mobo?, better memory maybe? pci-e card? Sata2 harddrives? or even half of an AMD-FX or P4EE processor :D.

I myself wants to see where this dualcore processor mumbo-jumo is going.

Here's an idea... dualcore videocards.. (not liek ati maxx or the multi-gpu voodoo5 series but you know what I mean.)

Me too. So I did it. I couldnt help it, when I finally saw some of them in stock at CompUSA.

Anyway, I had an FX5900 which I could already play everything at 1152x864 with high/max details. (I like playing at that resolutions b/c the refresh rate is still high, and the text/menu's dont get too small)

Anyway, I was a little disappointed with my 6800GT b/c I already had an awesome card. Granted now I turn on 4xAA with no fps hit. But I dont even really notice the difference in gameplay. Well, except for FarCry it runs smoother now. Too bad, I dont play it that much. I stil play SOF2 everyday.

I am waiting myself. All my games run well and look great. Doom3 and FarCry are the only games that really push my card, but even then I get playable FPS at high settings.

Actually, I was about to get a 6800GT but once I saw my performance on Doom3 I was satisfied and decided to wait for the next generation.

Unfortunately, my card is a R350 core, but i have my card currently OC'ed as stated in my sig. RAM hardly overclocks tho, so that is very dissapointing. How did you get your ram to get to 385? What kind of cooling do you need to get the ram like that? I got me a VGA silencer rite now so my core is running at 460 no sweat. My ram tho, thats another problem. I have no idea what the ram even looks like on a video card, so any help is appreciated :)

EDIT: ALso, if you could ifnd those lines that help doom 3 for my sig, it would be appreicated, thanks

so your gonna hold back. good for you! :) people who can resist urges seem to be in the minority these days.

normally by oct or so the revision 2 video card come out. since rev 1 cards are still quite rare it will be winter probably before any real price drops.

but then again ati may have decided to scrap this gen like nvidia did last year with 5800 and move up to 5900 sooner. Your new 250$ 6800gt may be closer then you think but there will probably be snow on the ground by then.
