RocketRAID 2720SGL - Broken raid set.

Hello everyone.

I have been sent here to seek your knowledge.

The problem is as follows:

I have a Raid 5 set with 8 drives at 1,5TB. Yesterday I got an error telling me that one drive was failing with bad sectors.

I then took one of my unused spares and switched out the defective one. I then added the new drive as a spare through the web interface. I then added it to the set and got a blue screen.

After booting I can see that the controller sees 2 sets. Both at 12TB, but the first set sees the first 4 and shows the rest as missing. The second set sees the last 4 drives.

How can I configure the set to join the missing drives?

I guess you don't have a backup? Are you running the latest version of the firmware and driver?

It's been ages since I used a highpoint card in windows, and I've never owned that particular card, but do you have a recover option in your management software?

So the drive you replaced is shown as a member of one of the raid sets and it did not complete the rebuild? Be very careful or you will lose all your data. Don't do anything rash. You don't want uninitialized data from the new drive messing things up. Register for highpoint web support and ask them how to proceed. It's easy to mess up and then you might not be able to recover any data at all. You shouldn't trust their answer either without checking with other people or thinking carefully through the situation yourself. If you have spare drives available now is a good time to clone each drive, alternatively power down the system until you have a plan.

Yes, it shows as a member. I had only one set named "SET1" with all 8 drives. After the blue screen there was two sets with name "SET1". Both showed the full 12TB size but with half the drives missing.

I didnt have anything extremely important on the set, so I went on and inserted the old defective drive and deleted all sets. After doing this, a backup showed up in the recover menu. I pressed restore and got a drive error. I tried to switch the defective drive with the spare one I tried earlier. That one showed up as legacy drive with errors. I guess I have to zero-out this to remove the metadata..

I then switched it out with a brand new drive and now it is rebuilding!

Thanks for your answer. Many not so positive things can be said about the cheap Highpoint controller, but the automatic backup it did at raid creation really saved me.
