Rocketfish 700w PSU

Well as some of you already know, my new Enermax 620W never got off the ground- RMA'ing as we speak. I couldn't hold off putting the system together just because of a bunk PSU so I marched down to Best Buy and purchased the only PSU they had on the shelf which was the Rocketfish 700w PSU. I had never heard of the brand but at this point in my life impatience seems to be what guides me these days. Anyway, much to my pleasure, I installed it and low-and-behold- it fired right up and hasn't failed as of yet. Anyway, further investigation has revealed that "Rocketfish" is Best Buys branding of computer related equipment. I was kind of curious to know who is actually responsible for the manufacturing of the PSU though. I hear that Rocketfish has a case that is actually a Lan Li case so I figured the power supply might be made from a reputable company. I doubt it, but wishful thinking is nice. Any leads?

I THINK it is a huntkey built psu of <700w. Meaning, they lied.

I suggest picking out another psu online, using the rocketfish until the new psu is there, and then refunding.

I'm pretty sure that the Rocketfish 700W is only a Huntkey Titan 650W.

And since that 650W is 650W peak at 25°C, we should call a spade a spade and say it's actually a 550W.

So where did 700W come from?

Geek Squad!

Seriously, it's not a bad PSU, but Best Buy asks a 700W price for it. You can buy virtually ANY 550W to 650W PSU from Best Buy for LESS money and get a BETTER unit. It just doesn't make sense.

I wouldn't pay more than $100 for that RocketFish "700W."

Since you already bought it, why don't you share your total system specs with us and we'll let you know if the unit you have will hold up, but IMHO, unless you have more than a pair of 8800 GTS cards or a large drive array, you'll be fine.

Well, I hadsome gift cards that were about to expire so I only ended up paying around 110.00 out of my own pocket. That being said, it was a load off my chest when the comp fired up so as of right now I'm pretty happy with the PSU. I don't think Enermax will have my Liberty back to me in time to get a refund on this Rocketfish psu though.

Well, if you can't return it at least you have a spare PSU around for trouble shooting and whatnot. Even if it's not the best PSU and is only a decent 500-550watt unit, it should be more then enough for trouble shooting on future builds. Not that I wish troubles on you ;)

Interesting...Can you back it up? I had a 450watt power supply and I took the first step of upgrading to crysis by upgrading my power supply to a rocketfish 700w. I work at best buy so instead of paying $169 for it, I only paid about $58. Is this a good PSU to run a 8800gt or a Geforce next?

Can you prove me wrong? Open it up and take pictures... or tell me if there's a UL logo on the unit (backwards R and U) with an E and a number underneath it that points to the PSU being made by anyone other than Huntkey.

On aesthetic obeservation, the PSU has a Huntkey type fan, fan grill, body and cables. Furthermore, all of the Dynex PSU's are also made by Huntkey, so I assume that the Rocketfish is a Huntkey as well.

Huntkey's biggest APFC unit is a 550W continuous, 650W peak unit. And I don't mean to say the biggest Huntkey branded unit in the U.S. market is this. I mean to say the biggest thing to come out of their factory PERIOD is this. I've worked with the folks at Huntkey, I like the folks at Huntkey and I know what they do there and if that PSU is in fact a Huntkey, it aint no 700W unit.

That's not to say that it's "crap" or "not enough" for you graphics card. As far as 550W power supplies go, the Huntkey is a VERY GOOD unit. But it's NOT a 700W unit and that's where the public gets screwed.

It does have that logo, but for what I paid, I don't think I can get a better deal, even if it may be 550w. Thanks for your guys' input on your expirences, and the information on the PSU

That's one question you should never ask JonnyGuru. ;)
His title should read PSU GAWD.

He knows PSU's better than anyone else I have ever seen on the web. His website is one of the few places to find legitimate, thorough PSU reviews. HardOCP is striving to be that way as well, and are getting closer with each new PSU review.

Thanks, but I wouldn't exactly go that far. I'm only 90% sure of myself. The pictures of Rocketfish 700W are vague at best and nobody's ever reviewed one. If we can confirm a UL # off the side, that's all we need to prove it's a Huntkey Titan 650 in 700W Best Buy clothing.

where would i find the UL#?

I too have this PSU. I have been rather happy so far, but having JG say it's a good psu makes me happier. Even if the advertising is a little 'off'.
no one to blame but bestbuy for faulty advertising ;)

if best buy ever bought amd ati nvidia or intel we'd all be screwed

Or worse.............. ;)
Yea, rumor has it we'll be seeing some more info on these soon, right Paul?
Anytime REALL soon?

Like, should I replace my PSU now, or is it safe to wait and think about it after the eval?

Rocketfish, Shmocketfish. Even at discount, they cost too much money for too little performance. (Same with the Dynex PSUs, most of which are also made by Huntkey.)

I have one....it is great...especially for the price I paid ($40)....much rather have a Thermaltake, but this is a great PSU.

Here's a link to the new modular PSU:

Think it's still made by Huntkey?

Here's a link to a review on the old one.

"We were expecting to burn or explode this power supply but, hey, it survived to our load tests! So it isn’t as bad as we originally thought (and proved that not all Huntkey power supplies are a piece of you-know-what). We could really extract 700 W from it at 50º C, so at least its label isn’t a lie, especially when we think that this model is originally labeled as a 650 W by the original manufacturer (Huntkey)."

Other than that the performance wasn't stellar at all. But it survived, heh.

I work there and I contacted corporate about it. They said [H] is biased because of advertising for thermaltake, antec etc on their pages.

In otherwords, they don't care. AT my store we stopped offering them, and as a result they are absolutely piling up on the shelves (both the 700w RF and the 400w Dynex). WHen you can geta thermaltake for 10$ more than the dynex, and a good BFG for a little more than the RF, it's easy to sell customers awway from these units.

The RF unit is not bad, but the dynex was terrible.

Yeah. The RF is modular, puts out decent power, and is quiet. What I do is offer it to customers installed for free. I just take the price out of the PSU for the install. saves them a buttload of time and gets them a nice-looking PSU. I do what I can anyways. But I mean it when I say I am going to make a stink about this. I hope not to get fired, but I am a firm believer in the values that Best Buy teaches, and the people I work with at my store are top notch. That's why I've stayed there almost four years.

Among those values are, of course, making money for employees and shareholders, but at the top of the list are providing a quality experience for customers. I live and breath this every day where I work, and we have a huge following of locals that will only shop at our Best Buy. In fact, I know several people who have a Best Buy in their town, over three hours away, but come to our best buy for big purchases because of the service. I will not tolerate an infraction upon my values where I work. That's why I have discounted the Rocketfish unit. Now that I know the Dynex 400 is so CRAPPY, I will start selling it for half price. I'm not even kidding. We still make 50% even at that price, and it is, after all, a budget PSU. It's not worth more than that.

I am so irked right now.

Run it through Ask The Bus on ETK, maybe having someone else point it out will make a difference...
