Rocket League

Got this with my steam controller, didn't know what to expect when I first tried it out, but I've been playing a couple games a day and it's a lot of fun. Feel free to add me on steam and I'll join up with you. Think I'm lvl 12 - Semi-pro right now.

Zrikz is steam name.

I got a BSOD last night. Now I'm kinda hesitant to play again.

I'm lvl 13 right now. I feel like my skill has regressed. I think I played better at day 2 than I do now. I miss the damn ball a LOT.

A Steam friend of mine was having BSoD issues, however he was using an old 5850 and hadn't updated his GPU drivers in a long time. What GPU are you using?

Two things: One, playing this game with randoms causes you to get into bad habits. You cannot rely on teammates to make the right plays and you end up pressing. You will certainly regress the more you play pub. Ranked mode with friends helps you to play smart.

And two, if you're missing the ball a lot, tinker with the camera settings. Especially the camera height. Some players feel that raising the height of the camera helps you line up shots better, but it's a personal preference sort of thing. Also tinker with the traditional camera settings such as FOV and distance.

GTX 670 with latest drivers as of a few days ago.

I can see that. That's not it. It's mostly what you say below.

Yeah. I came to that conclusion yesterday. I set my camera settings back to the default and it seemed to help a little bit. I also discovered that I need to switch my view more. If I'm NOT in ball cam, I miss less. I need to use ball cam when getting into position, but then switch to car cam to make my shots or something. I'll try raising the camera too.

The other thing is that I started on mouse and keyboard. I switched to a controller (old PS2 dual shock) and I think I haven't gotten the muscle memory down for the correct buttons. I find myself hitting the wrong buttons frequently, or hitting more than one on accident. I need to practice in free mode or something to build that muscle memory.

Up to about 440 now Silver I.

Playing with people who have mics prolly took me from a 30% win rate to damn near 70-80%.

Hell, Richneerd and I won like 11 in a row the other day.

I was practicing in 3v3 rookie match. My "friendly" AI drove the ball all the way across the arena into the goal two times in a row. I quit the game in disgust.

Rookie AI is bad.. but so are rookie players usually ;p,"Pro" AI is relatively good, had someone quit in the middle of a match and my AI scored twice on the other team and they were decent.

Game was a lot of fun at first, but has some huge issues.

1. Ball way too floaty in my opinion.
2. Everyone goes for the ball like first graders playing soccer, a large part of this problem is due to the falling speed of the ball being way too slow.
3. Also with #2 the double boost makes the problem worse.

The deathball mod for ut2k4 was far more fun than this.

Yeah, there's definitely a grade school soccer vibe when playing on low levels.

You need to play vs. more experienced opponents, the ball barely touches the ground. At higher levels, everyone is skilled at predicting where to ball is about to go, so you need to pick a spot where you think the ball is headed and get there first. Usually this spot is 30 feet off the ground, and games turn into Top Gun style battles for control in midair.

I've played for weeks on my 5850, and have never had a BSOD, but have had one CTD during that time.

Bump! Hoping to pick up a few copies of Rocket League when Steam Sale starts and get some friends to play next week. I haven't played it yet, but heard good things about it, been waiting for it to go on sale. Few questions:

Do you really need a controller to play it, or how much more difficult is it with M/KB?

Also, how much setup does it take to get in game? Does it run on LAN's, or is it online only? Do you have to make a profile anywhere besides Steam, or is it pretty easy to just hop in and start playing?

Mouse / Keyboard will work fine.

As for getting in game, it's literally as simple as you can hope to get. Join a queue for whatever you want to play, you're probably on the field within the minute. You can create a party and invite whoever on your steam friends.

Oh - forgot to mention I am wanting to play this at a LAN party with friends. A lot of people will just show up and want to hop in game without setting up a profile or anything. So if it works with just their existing Steam login/profile that'd be great. We would want to just start a friends-only match, and if it allows for connection over LAN that'd be nice too but not absolutely required.

Haven't seen anyone post about Rocket League in ages here. Still my most played game.

Made my first montage video last night. It is pretty basic, still figuring out various software to use.

This is too funny not to post.

EA is on a serious hunt for an E-Sports game like Rocket League as detailed in this IGN article. Here is a quote from the article:
"Would I want to be the guy that found Rocket League?" asked Söderlund. "Yes. Would I want that to be an EA property? Of course I would like to. That’s [the idea behind EA Originals]. For us to be able to find these people and help understand what they’re building and help push it to market. For us to find something else."

Rocket League developers wonder out loud why EA is looking for a Rocket League E-Sports game when they were turned down by EA executives in 2011.
EA turned down Rocket League, according to a Psyonix dev | PC Gamer

Like I said. Way too funny not to post. ;)

EA the corporate derps. They say what they want regardless of actual facts.

650 hours on record for me, something about this game keeps me coming back for more, even after getting pissed off or frustrated.

This game has the replay value of goldeneye.

No matter how old goldeneye is, with friends it's the best game ever. This is almost on par with that.

I fired up Rocket League last night, after not playing in months. I think this is the second time I've tried it with triple screen (which is AWESOME in this game!). I can't hit the damn ball. Ever. I think I need to tweak the perspective options. It's frustrating. Time to run the tutorials again.

Man I wish they would remove Wasteland and Neo Tokyo from ranked matches.
Fine for casual, but having those maps in competition is beyond stupid. This is why we always have the same looking terrain in football, tennis, basketball, etc.

I hate wasteland and Neo =/ If anyone is up for some competitive 2v2 or 3v3, shoot me an invite on steam: Zrikz I'm challenger on both, struggle getting higher on pick up games.. it's hit or miss.
