RMA with Maxtor?

I recently had a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 200Gb SATA hard drive die on me, and I am wondering if anyone has had a decent experience with Maxtor RMA's.

I am also wondering if Maxtor will have an issue with how I described my problem, since I said windows didn't recognize my drive which wasn't completely true, it wouldn't recognize it in one computer but in another one it did. It also makes clicking noises when I plug it in, though I'm sure Maxtor will notice that.

So basically I just need to know if I should've RMA'ed it to Maxtor, or if I just have just trashed it. :)

If you're still under warranty, and you haven't done anything to damage the drive yourself (like unplugging the power cable while the pc is on and then plugging it back in) I think you're OK to RMA it.

You didn't lie about the problem... they're not expecting every user RMA'ing drives to have a spare PC to test on, and they will test the drive when you send it in to them anyway. From the clicking, it sounds like the drive is on it's way out anyway.

I think I did a maxtor RMA earlier this year (might have been WD). It was pretty painless, and I even did the advance ship option so that I'd have the correct packing materials.

Yeah, you should be fine with the RMA. Were you able to get an RMA code from PowerMax, or would it not even start with the drive plugged in?

Do the advanced shipment option if you can (requires a credit card, but no charge), and they'll send you new drives first. You can then reuse their packing to ship your dead drives back to them with to ensure they are packed properly. :)

For what my opinion is worth, I will echo these sentiments. Advance RMA rocks - you get your rig back in action in less than 72 hours, you get free packing material that is Maxtor approved for shipping the bad drive back in, and you don't even have to fool with throwing a box away after it's all done. Advance RMA FTW!

I also just did an advance RMA with maxtor. So far it seems like a painless process. I just wish they paid for shipping both ways as well though.

Maxtor foots enough of the bill on RMA returns. The retailer you bought it from should pay shipping, most of the time it's their fault anyway (unless you're talking about DiamondMax 8's... ). :(

At least they pay for 1 of the 2 shipments though!

For some reason I didn't go through the retailer, and went with Maxtor directly. It wouldn't have mattered through, since outpost.com doesn't pay for shipping to them.

But what do you mean by "We foot enough of the bill on RMA returns" above?

Half. They pay shipping to you. That's my guess anyways. And he works for maxtor, hence the "We" part.

er, yeah, I should edit that. I was at work and had the "we" sentiment going on the subject after hearing some VP's bitching about RMA returns. I work for Maxtor so..yeah

yeah, _Maxtor_ foots enough of the bill on RMA returns when a lot of them aren't even their fault.

Also - you did the right thing by going through the RMA process directly with Maxtor. The retailer couldn't have done anything. My point is only that the retailers themselves are responsible for a lot of RMA returns (see Newegg) yet have no reprocussions for such.

Friendly reminder/disclaimer: My opinions are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Maxtor Corporation and should not be construed as such.

My HD was in my rig for a good 11 months before it died, I bought a Western Digital because I needed a hard drive fast. I did the advance RMA option through the Maxtor website, just waiting for the drive to get here and then I'll ship the dead one back. I didn't ever do anything to damage the drive, though it had been quite noisy ever since I installed it. With a kind of grinding noise when it was accessing files..

I have no problems with Maxtor as a company, it just seems that their drives die a lot. Though hopefully this new drive will fair better ;)
