Returning Seagate HD's Because BOTH failed:
Anyways:

# Use original packaging when possible.

You can find packaging supplier(s) at our Packaging Information page.

* Enclose each drive in a SeaShell container or an ESD (electrostatic discharge) bag. If packaging more than one drive, use a separate container for each drive.

* Enclose the static-protected drive(s) in 2-inch foam rubber in a corrugated box. Multiple drives in a single box must have foam rubber between each drive. DO NOT USE foam packing pellets, bubble wrap, or newspaper.

Please take the time to read that.

Please Note Electrostatic Bags, and Foam casing.

Please also note, return in orginal packaging.

Now, here is the issue, on possibly why my HD's went bad.

When I recieved my bundle of computer parts, my HD's both, were placed in Foam Pellets and Wrapped in Bubble wrap. No Electrostatic casing, no nothing. Wrapped in Bubble Wrap and stuffed into a cardboard box.

Wtf mate? So one of my questions is, do I use the orginal UPS crap packaging? Or do I go out and buy a Authorized Seagate Return package so I don't have to hear them bitch at me?

I would call them and ask them...assuming you have time on your hands, I would request that they send you empty packaging material of their preference, since they were so careless the first time.

^ If you can get them to send you shipping material that would be cool.

I've RMA'd a Seagate drive before and I used chunks of styrofoam. I put a chunk on the bottom, set the drive in, put some on the sides, and then another slab on the top. They took it without any problems.

A little OT, I received a RMA drive from Maxtor. It was in a sealed ESD bag and had two plastic peices to make it fit snug in the box. Of course the instructions say to reuse the box and put the bad hd in a esd bag and then 2 inches of foam around. why can't i just ship it the same way they shipped it? doesn't make sense, eh?

thats how my retail 200gig maxtor came....
call seagate...then get a WD or maxtor.... :D

I think I'll have to call. If they tell me to go out and buy their actual boxes, I think I am going to give them a big F* You and ship it back exactly how it came with a note inside. Unless they are willing to repay me the money I spent repacking their stuff.

This sucks, I bought Seagate hearing they were a good brand, quite and reliable. Funny how life works. First HD: WD 8GB Perfect...till I updated my comp and a 2MB Buffer no longer was adequete. Second HD: IBM Desk(Death)Star. 40GB Failed. Boot sectors became unfixabbly corrupt. Third HD: WD 60GB (Still working :-D) Fourth and Fifth HD: Seagate 80GB Sata (Failed).

I think there is a trend of reliabilty in WD :-D These next two Seagate drives better not fail on me.

but they wouldnt have been
some reseller did that, Seagate always ships in their packaging

one of the reasons they seem to have a lower failure rate (based on my empirical experience in here) is that they have a much better distribution system, packaging, and handling education program for distributors, integrators and end users than do most other makes

also because they arent as likely to be on retailers shelves for stock boys and the general public to abuse

Id explain the situation and ask for "official" instructions

Well After I called them and got connected to a hispanic woman that literally barely spoke english and claimed the Phone connection was "bad" I was told to ship it exactly how it was shipped to me. So I put it back in its bubble wrap, stuffed it in a box, and threw foam pellets around.

After I got off the phone, I checked my email where I explained the siutation and I got back a 3 line email (that seemed automated and tagged with some workers name) that I should "Kindly, follow the shipping and packing instructions" I also enjoy the fact they did not address any of my other questions...

Whatever...

FedEx-ing it tomorrow.

Question: Since its under warrenty, they say they will pay for shipping and handling. Now I understand that when I go to FedEx tomorrow I will have to pay the money to get it going. How are they (Seagate) going to reimburse me for this?

Also, will it come back to me in actual seagate boxes and not in crappy packaging this time around?

"it"
more than likely wont be coming back,
but another one in the normal packaging should be
as far as shipping and handling Im not sure
it might only apply to "from" them
otherwise Id have expected them to send you a shipping lable with their account

Hm...

New Concern:

Fedex tells me it was Delivered and signed today at 8:25AM. It arrived a day early. Yet now, 6:15PM when I checked Seagates RMA Status they claim they have not recieved any drives from me yet..

Wtf? Is this normal? Maybe I am just being anxious? I hope someone just didn't sign and get two free drives off me. That would piss me off royally.

maybe just a little bit :p

give it a day or two, when they "sign" for a drive
that generally means they recieved todays half a truckload of RMAs and returns from FedEx
and they put it next to the UPS load :p

thats not to imply that they make bad drives
or even a guess as to the amount of returns per day,
but its safe to say your is one of many and its simply not in their system yet

your covered, FedEx has your back ;)

also keep in mind its the post holiday season
likely the first day back at work, and they likely have a backlog of RMAs considering the time of year, Id give em even more that 2 days ;)

Thanks a lot. Alright. *Breathes* Yippie.

Now all I have to hope for is that I get back my two drives before the 11th so I can install XP and Office for school!
