RMA experiences with Intel?

Have any of you ever tried to RMA a processor that's been overclocked with Intel? I realize overclocking voids the warranty, but do they have any way to tell for sure that it was overclocked?

Ergo, would I be wasting my time trying to RMA a dead processor that's been overclocked?
 
Always worth a shot to try...according the my intel rep, there is not simple software solution for finding out if a cpu was overclocked (I was asking for my company regarding warranty issues on our gaming rigs) If there is a physical identifier then the worst thing they will do is send it back with a sol letter.
 
Can't hurt to try. The worst case is they say no and you are out the shipping to send it to them.

I had an old P433 I think die on me. I sent it in, and they kinda lost the paperwork for a few months. When I called to check up on it like 6 months later, they finally replaced the dead CPU. I had already replaced the dead part, so I just sold the replacement that Intel sent me.

Someone that I talked to a couple months ago said that CPU's have a chip or something which records all the speeds the processor has seen. I don't know if thats true as I've really heard nothing else about it but I would think there would be no way to tell if its been overclocked unless something like that was in place.
 
Well the real question is whether you damaged the CPU overclocking or not.

If you overvolted the CPU then I wouldn't bother RMAing as its your own fault.

If you just pushed it a little with stock volts...I probably would.

it also records anything bad that you say about intel.

unless the cpu is crispy, or has been lapped or some other silly modification, you can rma it. and intel's rma service is great, you should have a new one in about 1 week or so after you ship.
 
My BadAxe2 RMA was as pain free as it gets. Quick turnaround, and no hassles.
 
I was happy with 3.2GHz on stock voltage. My motherboard died the other day and I ordered a new one. It worked fine in the old board, which was replaced because the RAID controller died. It would still POST fine and try to boot. So something happened to it when I tried it in the new board. All of my other hardware is working fine in the new mobo, with an old P4D I had laying around, so I know it's the CPU.

I'll give it a try and see what happens.
 
The chip contains a frequency record that shows any changes made. If Intel desides to check it, you're out of luck, if not, consider yourself lucky.
 
It's completely and utterly morally wrong. If you do it, short and simple: you're an asshole.
 
Proof? Well, that's tough considering I don't work for intel and I do not plan on walking into intel head-quaters and sniff an engineer in the ass.

I've heard of GPU's having this as well, now I'm sure they're not going to diagnose the insides of a processor to find this out just for an RMA, but if there were a high dose of RMA's on a particular CPU, i'm sure they're capable of figuring that out.

I myself would really like to know the answer, as this topic has come up before. Maybe someone with ties to Intel will be lucky enough to browse through this topic and shed some light on it.
 
how is a processor going to record what frequency it has been run at? It has no battery power to support a "ram drive" where it could write down the last frequency it was used at. Even a bios chip resets itself to default settings after you remove it from the socket.

Only real way i can think of intel knowing if it was overclocked is having gates on the cpu that open up if the CPU's FSB was pushed past a certain limit, and if its voltage was increased aswell.

However i dont think intel wants to piss off its customers as alot of people buying their processors are people who are going to overclock them (remember AMD's high horse of not listening to its customer base? and look at where they are now)

You don't work for intel and you've never made / designed / fabricated a computer processor. If they want to implement a method for the CPU to be able to record or *black box* whatever frequencies it has gone through, they could very well do so. Just because you think it isn't possible, doesn't mean it isn't capable.

If intel wanted to - it could very well deny an RMA for a particular CPU for many reasons, some being overclock abuse , some being over-volting the cpu. Intel can diagnose the CPU and find out if they wanted to. But it doesn't make sense for them to go through so much trouble and invest money and time into one particular RMA.

Well.....Cars speedometers are almost always stuck at the speeds they crashed at, surely intel has something similar
 
this should be very simple - if anyone has been turned down by intel for an rma because they "overclocked", plse post here. or if anyone has ever heard of anyone being turned down because of "overclocking", please post link.
while not an engineer/intel employee, i find it a little tough to take that there is something monitoring and recording out of spec frequencies and time/date (what use would one be without the other?) on board a cpu. and if the cpu is broken, how is intel supposed to access this data?

to op - is the cpu broken because it was overclocked, or is it broken and it was overclocked?

Date / Time is irrelevant, date and time doesn't void a warranty, overclocking does.

Intel fabricates it's own chips, they have the power to access any type of information that is provided / recorded by the chip itself, could very well be hardware.

Exactly, And no doubt it only costs them probably 50$ at most to make ANY of thier CPU's

The first part of your reply is funny because you don't work for intel either so what do you know?

I agree with the other half though, they will not waste time checking unless it has visible damage.
 
RMA'ed an E6300 with an uneven IHS. You have to jump through some hoops if you call for an RMA, and do a little "troubleshooting" to diagnosis the problem, before they'll issue an RMA. They'll ask questions like: did you make sure to put the cpu securely in the socket? or is there thermal paste on the heatsink? The whole process seems scripted, so just play their game and don't take any shit from them.

If you want to make it easier, just don't even mention overclocking or even using any other heatsink besides the stock one, or they'll say they don't support overclocking or third party heatsinks.

Most processors are sold through OEM's, so those processors would never be referred to Intel for replacement if bad. That actual number of warranty requests that actually go to Intel is probably quite small. While I am sure they have a script to run you through before issuing an RMA, I bet they spend little time checking the returns. They may look for scorch marks and bent pins, but I doubt they even bother to plug them into a test jig.

Retail CPU's are their most profitable segment of the business. The oft quoted 1000 unit price to OEM's is deeply discounted to the major players like Dell and HP. They are very careful to not piss off their most loyal repeat customers, the enthusiast market. While they may say that they do not warrant overclocked chips, send one in that does not have physical damage, and I bet it goes through with no problems.

I have no facts to back this up, just my opinion on how businesses operate.
