RMA a modded mobo?

I've been using a Leadtek K7nCR18GM in my HTPC. It stopped working a while ago, and I tried everything under the sun to try to fix it. Finally, I examined the board itself and found a whole bunch of bulged and leaking capacitors. From what I've seen this happens alot.

Leadtek has already said they'd RMA it. The problem is, I've removed the northbridge HSF and replaced it with a passive heat sink. I have no doubt that the caps were bad regardless of my mod, however, what is Leadtek going to say? Should I remove my heat sink and ship it with no cooler? The original HSF had these plastic clips that I had to cut to remove it, so I'm not sure how I could put it back on.
 
Not too sure about how you could replace it, but I would definitely recommend trying to return it to its unmodded condition. This is presuming you are 100% sure the damage is not your fault, since I would heavily caution you against RMAing if it is your fault, even if in the least.

Yeah, I am definately not trying to scam Leadtek. I've seen tons of people with stock boards complain about bad capacitors, and I don't see how changing the chipset cooler could cause the problem either.
 
in your case, if you are sure your mod has nothing to do with it failing, then by all means RMA it. Put it back to stock and mail away.
 
Recap it, the manufacturer will just put more shitty caps back on it, or bin it and give you the exact same board with the exact same shitty caps..

GLUXON or Jackon brand on there?

I just got a board mailed to me, caps shorted and blew the power mosfet apart, also took out the XP1800 that was onboard...

Could have been avaoided with a close inspection and recap.

HTPC are vulnerable since they are usually in micro cases, ie higher system temp stesses poor quality caps and you get dead hardware.
