Just note your success or failure in this thread, there is another thread to discuss the technicalities of the mod.

Post:
Card Type - Brand and any other special info about it
Success - None, Partial (note if its just the vertex unit or just the pixel unit), Total success (both pixel unit and vertex unit working)

For instance, in my case:

-eVGA 6800, 128 MB RAM
-Total success, no artifacts with both vertex and pixel unit enabled.

eVGA 6800.
Success: None, some possible hardware problems as a result.

I had some pretty bad artifacts in 2D. However, I turned off the opened pipes and the artifacts went away, but every 5 seconds in 3Dmark03 the tests will studder for a second. Say it's going at 60FPS, then it would drop to 20FPS for no apparent reason, and go back to 60FPS. I never noticed it do this before.

Riva tuner worked great for me, 3dmark scores and fill rate increased quite a bit. I had to drop my OC down from 400/825 to 338/371 but my scores didn't drop any. I think I might get better cooling and up the voltage a bit and see what happens. My card is a MSI 6800nu.

eVGA 6800 16+6 no artifacts in Doom 3

Not like double the performance or anything, but sure feels nice to get something extra for free!

(Dell OEM) nVidia 6800 GTO
256MB GDDR3
350MHz Core, default
900MHz Memory, default
12 Pixel Pipes, default ===> modded to 16 Pixel Pipes successfully
5 Vertex Shaders, default ===> modded to 6 Vertext Shaders successfully

With no artifacts in 3DMark05/ RTHDRIBL/ Far Cry.

3D 2k5 marks went up about 300 points, and the core seems to run about 5 degrees cooler now. Very, very nice

BFG 6800 OC
Total Success

my 3Dmark03 scores went from 9376 to 10201
Doom 3 ran great.

Galaxy 6800nu with silencer fitted as standard.

16x6 total success... :)

D3 has gone up about 28%.

3D mark 03 up just over 1000 points..

Luvly Jubbly :D :D

Leadtek WinFast A400 TDH 6800 (128MB)
Running at stock speed (325/700)

Success - Both enabled, no artifacts whatsoever.

Card run hotter then before, from around 55 to 60 (idle) and 60 to 66 (load).
Got only 300pts increase in 3DM05, at least I got something for nothing :)
The good news is the card still overclockable, haven't really pushed it but it was running stable at 360/800. I'm pretty sure it can go a lil bit more.

BFG 6800OC, all pipes and shaders enabled.

Minor minor artifacting in 3dm03 (barely even noticable unless you look)

+1000 points in '03
+200 points in '05

temperatures are only about 1 degree C hotter

Holy crap! I have GT that isn't eligible for the mod but I am building a system for a coworker that has a eVGA 6800 as the vid card.....I finished all the hardware installs last night and then I saw this thread. I dl'ed the new Rivatuner just for kicks and guess what....complete success. Before I tried the mod I ran 3dmark03, 05 and installed Madden 05. After the mod unlocked all the pipes I ran the benches and got much higher than before (I'm at work now and don't remember the numbers) and then ran Madden flawlessly at 2x AA 4X AF. There were no artifacts or glitches.. after oc'ing the card to 380/790 things were even better. I think I will give him the option of leaving it like this or going back to stock....I think he will take the freebie.

BUMP, b/c this is one sweet ass softmod.

Kudos to Riva Tuner for good work. :)

If this was around a few weeks back I think I would have saved $100+ and tried my luck with a 6800 vanilla instead of the GT.

eVGA 6800 running @ 875/375

-Total success, no artifacts with both vertex and pixel unit enabled.

Are you getting the slowdowns I mentioned?

I was getting slowdowns, but I later found out it was caused by my overclock. Reducing the overclocked fixed it.

I get it at at stock speeds :(

BFG 6800OC total success (altho im having some oc related issues, no idea if they're related)
pixel unit 0 vertex unit 3

I tried this mod, but (and please forgive me) how do I tell whether or not I have at least one benefit from this mod. I get artifacts right after trying this, so I went back. I'd check again if I knew I can get vertex shaders? Again please forgive my stoopidness (is that a word?)

If you get artifacts, then the mod was unsuccessful for you. Don't think there is much you can do about it.

whats up with these softmod results.?

when the rivatuner first came out, the results were very poor. only 5-6% were able to softmod their cards. the polls at guru3d, etc. showed that.

now things look a whole lot different. i see over 85% success in this poll. Whatever happened in these last 2 months or so?

I wouldn't put too much faith in these statistics. Could be that people who's mods didn't work don't feel like posting while those with good mods want somewhere to brag.

Mine didn't work totally: My BFG 6800 OC has slight artifacting at 16 pipes. It showed up in 3dMark 03 in the troll & space de,os, but not in the WW2 demo. I havent tried any othert games or demos. It wasnt the usual multicolor triangles all over the place, but you could see the outlines of the triangles behind the textures. It did impact image quality. I can probibly make the difference up overclocking this thing anyway.

BFG 6800 OC, 12p x 5v, 3dmark03 = 8779, fine
BFG 6800 OC, 12p x 6v, 3dmark03 = 8901, fine
BFG 6800 OC, 16p x 6v, 3dmark03 = 9473, with slight artifacting

What happened was that unwinder released a new version of RVT that unlocks over 90% of pipes/vertex, whether they are broken or not is a different matter, find more ino at www.guru3d.com

The original version of the RivaTuner softmod only worked if the extra pipes/shader were disabled by the card BIOS or the drivers, not if they were "hardware masked," that is, disabled on the GPU right after manufacturing. The newest RivaTuner can work around the hard masking, thus greatly imrpoving the chances of success. Before that, the only way to get through the hardware masking was by a BIOS flash, and then if the pipes/shader didn't work right, you couldn't turn them back off again. The Riva softmod is safe--if the parts don't work, just disable the softmod.

Another reason for higher success is that, in the time that has passed, a higher percentage of 6800 NU owners are those who bought newer cards. In the price-point/marketing game, if you run out of defective chips to make the low-end cards, you have to start crippling perfectly good chips. Right now is the sweet spot--NVidia is mostly out of defective chips, but has not yet created a revised core that doesn't have the extra features in the first place, like it did for the 6600/6200 family. My bet is that they will do this eventually, so if you want a moddable 6800, this is the time.

But back to thread topic: BFG 6800 OC, 16 Pipes/6 shaders, no artifacts at 370/800. Artifacts begin appearing with the core at 380, but only in the Nalu demo. Such artifacts might be why my GPU was binned as defective in the first place--needs to run slower, not needs to have stuff turned off.

There was a big breakthrough in understanding how pipes were masked between Rivatuner 15.1 and 15.2. Visit the website

http://www.guru3d.com/rivatuner

ok, now i understand. that explains.

i wasnt into these things much during the last month due to the fact that we went on a vacation, so thats the reason.

thanks for the replies everyone

Man there's a lot of success with this, a few guys were talking about how it wasn't going to be worth trying 'cause all the cards were OBVIOUSLY going to have defective pipes, guess they get to eat their words. Been running for more than a week now with zero problems and a noticable improvement in speed.

Worked like a dream...no artifacts and raised my 3dmark03 scores from 7828 to 8462! Now I can throw this 9800se against the wall :)
