Ripping CDs - archive vs. portable

So, now that I've got a portable music player, I figure it's time to rip all of my CDs. I figure I'll need two versions - one ripped in some lossless format (suggestions?) so I could recreate the CD if need be, and another version in a compressed format (mp3, AAC, etc - suggestions for format and bitrate?) to balance out space and sound quality on the player. Let me know the thoughts of the [H] on this. Thanks!
 
I suggest:
Ripping to WAV with EAC then:

FLAC for lossless

and whichever LAME setting (mp3 encoder) you prefer.
 
what formats does your portable audio player support? My vote is for AAC/MP4 if your audio player supports it otherwise go with the Lame mp3 encoder.
 
Sorry, the portable version will be going on the ubiquitous ipod (20 gig)
 
Check out the program FLACattack. It'll rip to lossless, and the lossy codec of your choice in one step. Just configure an INI file, and use EAC to make the magic happen =]

Use FLAC with cuesheets, which will preserve any and all gaps in the disc, and make it easy to burn a copy when you feel the need. Compress to high-bitrate AAC, that would be the best choice.
 
Hmm, I'll definitely have to check that out. Getting both copies ripped in one fell swoop sounds nice.
 
BO(V)BZ, doesn't that save one step by doing both at the same time but gain a step by having to rip to WAV first?

Right now I use EAC to rip to FLAC then Foobar2000 to encode the FLACS into --alr-preset extreme mp3's
 
if your going to be usung an ipod just rip your cds with itunes. just set it so it rips in 320 kbps and make it rip in AAC
 
Zachary80: Yeap, you can configure it to compress to FLAC [of course =] and then the lossless codec of your choice.. maybe even several, but I'm not positive. Won't save you any encoding time, but it'll simplify ripping if you have a portable.

Don't use Itunes for an encoder, the builtin CD ripper isn't as good as EAC's. You might as well use the best that you can get.
