Hi

So recently after a fairly long, noisy and unstable few weeks in ICU my PSU has finally, officially died. Tested on another comp, nothing. Tried another PSU on main rig, booted! So now im in the market for a new one. I was looking at the Antec earthwatts 750, mainly because i can get it for 10 bucks more than the 650, 13 more than the 600.

Right now ive got an i7 that was unstably OC'ed to 3.5Ghz (although I now suspect it was the PSU causing the instability), and an 8800GTX still chugging along until the holiday specials when I can get a 5850 for a reasonable price.

I dont have plans for crossfire (or sli if something changes in the next couple months), but do not want to limit myself in the future if I do. I see good things about most of the earthwatt series, does this hold true for the 750 as well?

All those expensive components getting power from a generic PSU. That's brave.

The EA units are good. I prefer Corsair.

3 replies, only 1 relevant to the question. I understand it was a mistake, but could I get some actual opinions on the EA-750? the i7 rig was the first time I bought something that wasnt budget oriented, old habits made me think the budget psu would work with it.

Actually they all are relevant because we're teaching you that generic PSUs are bad to use. Period. Doesn't matter what the system is. Healthy power = healthy components.

I assume it wasn't a POWMAX since your system is still intact.

I already figured I shouldnt have used it since it died, but some actual comments on the EA-750 would be appreciated, since thats my question. Perhaps I should have left out the word generic?

Edit: it was some "ultra" 600W model

As in "Ultra" is the brand? Ultra isn't necessarily generic. It's a TigerDirect brand.

The EarthWatts models are fine. I have an EA380 in my WHS box. I'm sure the higher power units follow the same specs.

Yep that brand. I just thought it was generic since one fan died about 2 weeks in (it has 2 80mm fans), the other about a year later amongst other noise issues (and no warranty since I voided it replacing the fan inside which was a simple fix). Also was having some stability issues with relatively mild overclocks. Thanks for the comments, believe me I learned my lesson when the computer wasnt on this morning and wouldnt even boot up (its usually on 24/7 folding or using BOINC).

The Earthwatts is fine. (I'm pretty sure it's made by Seasonic.) The Earthwatts line are "value" PS's: the cost is on good internals not frills.

Been running an earthwatts 500 for a few years now. Has never given me any problem. It's a solid reliable PSU without the bling.

actually you aren't teaching, you're mocking him for his choice and misfortune, teaching is more than a bit different

as far as the Antec units go, very good performers, and I'd have no issues suggesting them, you might also look at Corsair or Seasonic themselves, like the S12 or M12 (whatever its called, the one with the dual fan setup), could also look at PCP&C, although a few users have reported noise as an issue (not that their specific units broke, that they find the noise generated to be louder than desirable, especially the 910W it would seem)

I have an EA380 in my secondary box that has been really good to me. I would not hesitate to get another one if I was building another system. My NeoHE 550 has also been really good to me for the last few years.

Delta, actually.[/QUOTE]

Now that I'm awake :D I recall reading that there are different versions of this PS. Depending on its vintage and what part of the world, it may have been OEM'd by either Delta or Seasonic. In Australia Antec sells a EA380D made by delta. Reviews done on units obtained elsewhere (Xbit for instance) state Seasonic. Not sure that it makes much difference.

The EA750 has always been Delta - never Seasonic ;)

Seasonic was only found in the lower watt models.

Seasonic used to make the EA380, EA430, and EA500. Antec then switched to Delta for the EA430 and EA500, and later on they introduced the EA650, and the EA750 at some point after that. The only Earthwatts model currently made by Seasonic is the EA380.
