On May 1st, 2008, the Sony STR-DE835 AV Receiver suddenly perished. Numerous attempts were made to save the receiver (replacing fuses) but when the paddles (electricity) was applied to the receiver, the subject did not respond (still dead). After an autopsy it was determined that the failure was do to sudden shock to the heart (main power stage) after nearly 10 years of service to friends, family, and most importantly its owner. The 835 leaves the relatives...........

Couldn't resist. :p The damn thing lasted for nearly 10 years. It failed because I was rehooking my system up after a flood in the basement and accidentally shorted an output while making sure the left was left and the right was right. The short circuit system did kick in. My guess is that it was to late..and the FET's failed after taking a decade long beating.

So the question is..what replaces it. I've always had a warm spot for the Onkyo 605...but I see the 606 is coming out (with 4 HDMI inputs). Is there any other receiver out that matches the Onkyo 605/606 series for the $?

Best case I see on the 605 is from Amazon for ~$390 shipped. Not sure if the Extra $110 is worth it for two more HDMI inputs. However…a PC + PS3 + Digital Cable box might sway me.

You can't go wrong with the Onkyos. I have always been a fan, and for the $$, the feature set you get in the 605 is hard to beat. The 606 just ups the ante. I've got 2 Onkyo AV Receivers, my old 5.1 receiver is over 10 years old, and now powers my outside deck speakers, and my TX-NR901 powers my current AV setup. It predates HDMI and I am sorely tempted to replace it, but it does such a good job still.
