About 2 years ago I purchased a brand-new Western-Digital 120GB, IDE, 8MB Buffer, 7200RPM, hard-drive. Lately I've been noticing that a few seconds into powering-up my system, I can hear a high-pitch ringing from my hard-drive. I tried applying pressure to all sides to stop internal vibrations... nothing worked. What can be the problem and how do I fix this? Thanks.
 
I would recommend backing up all info on the drive, it sounds like it is walking towards the light.
 
Spindle motor noise tends to increase as a drive ages. I would characterize the noise of an old and worn spindle motor as sort of a 'ringing' or 'tinny' sound. They almost sound like the old MFM/RLL drives. :)

It could be something to worry about, or the drive might have years left in it. You really never know... I've got a 26GB Quantum Fireball in a spare machine that the motor is quite noisy on but it shows no signs of being near death otherwise. Runs all day. :)
 
I have a 40 Gig WWD that does the same thing. I am thinking about just buying a new drive maybe a Seagate 200 Gig.
 
It happens to my HDD at start up too, nothing to worry about stuff ages...I guess.
