Hey guys.

Asking for help to build a rig to maximize the new MMO Rift. The goal is 1080p on ultra settings for as little money as possible.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Rift, other light gaming, but mostly Rift.

2) What's your budget? The minimum necessary to achieve the aforementioned desired settings

3) Where do you live? AZ

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? Cpu, mobo, ram, system drive (have external storage), case, psu, video card


5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Mouse, key board, monitor, dvddrive

6) Will you be overclocking? Only if necessary

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? 24 inch asus 1080p

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Asap

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? Nothing fancy, this is for gaming

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? Yes, win7 64 bit

How much at most are you willing to spend? "As little as possible" may or may not account for an SSD as your primary drive or a high-end video card capable of running Rift at Ultra settings.

(Hell, what's the minimum number of frame rates are you seeking to reach?)
 
I used to hear that you needed 60 frames for a smooth experience.... Not sure if that is the case in an mmo.

I have an ssd in my laptop that I could use if absolutely necessary, but I am thinking a small 7200 hdd will be fine.

In reality, I would like to be around 400, but I don't think I can squeeze in a card and cpu capable of my desired settings at that price point... My wife doesn't want me spending alot as it's coming up on baby time..

Let's put 500 as the theoretical cap but say that closer to 400 would be better
 
I know 500 isn't much, but it buys alot more than it used to. The egg has a phenom 2 quad core combo with mobo, 4 gigs of ram, case, psu and 1 tb drive for about 350.... Could add an ok video card and be out for 500.

I just thought perhaps the gurus here could do better.

I'm more than willing to bet that combo comes with a some shitty PSU and some crappy case that are both unsuitable for any decent video card.

Anyway, I want to see HG work his magic with this build list :)
 
I have several builds. I know it might be a bit overkill for Rift but it's $499.78 w/shipping and $45 in MIR.
 
I have a 2.9Ghz Quad, 8GB of ram,1GB HD5770, and a 300gb Raptor, and I barely get 30fps at 1080p with Rift on Ultra.

It'll dip to 18fps or so in heavy moments. Was a bit surprised about this.

Hmm...forget what I said about being a bit overkill for Rift. Hmmm.. I wonder if an NVIDIA GTS 450 would be more optimized for Rift. I'm shocked that Rift can be that demanding.
 
I'd buy a used Q6600 setup and get the best videocard possible.
 
Hmm...if thats the case, maybe should just get everything except the video card. Then, buy a pretty decent video card later. I was going to put together a build with a Radeon HD 5770 or Geforce GTS 450 but, doesn't look like your going to attain the frame rates that you want.
 
Are you able to increase your budget to $700? Finding a good enough video card appears to be the problem we have with your $500 limit.

Is there something crazy on "ULTRA" settings that accounts for the poor fps? I know there can be one option in some games that you enable and performance is decreased significantly.

If you run shadows it will kill your FPS! Also RIFT does not play nice with duel core CPUs. I was using an AMD Athlon X2 7550 (I know crappy CPU) and was lucky to get 12-15 FPS. Just upgraded to an AMD Phenom II X4 925 and now average 30-35 FPS on Ultra w/o shadowing.

The killers are shadows and view distance. after some playing around with settings last night, I discovered I can turn up all other settings if I leave shadows off and view distance low with my mobility 5650 pushing my external monitor.... stays around 35 fps normally, drops a bit during rifts. I am now worried that I need a really top end graphics solution to get where I want to be.
 
Yup. Enabling shadows and AA can really hinder the games performance. When I played Crysis and enabled AA, it really dropped the frames that I could easily tell the game was slow. I had to just not bother with AA.
 
You'll need a really good cpu imo. I'd look into a 2500k or 2600k if possible. On my Q6600 which I run regularly at 3.51GHz, upgrading from a GTX 260 to a HD 6850 resulted in absolutely no improvement in performance in Rift. I'm looking at a 2600k myself but there is a shortage on motherboards... so I'll wait for socket 2011 boards to come out.

I'm usually between 25-30fps and not even with maxed settings at 1680x1050... I know my upgrade wasn't major but I at least expected a few frames better. But in fact, I think it may even be running worse.
 
ATI cards are known to run slightly worse than nvidia cards in Rift. Also, the 6850 is almost a sidegrade to the 260. I wouldn't have expected much, if you're seeing worse frames, you can probably chalk it up to drivers.

That's why I'm focused on at least a mid tier Nvidia card for my build.
