Riddle me this? (Internet)

Nope, doesn't sound good. Maybe we should just shoot the dead horse? Them's good eatin' Tex!

Are there any NIC diagnostics that came with the MB CD? Have you tried them?

just reinstall the drivers from the drivers for the nic..sorry i reread what i posted earlier, if your computer isnt requesting a dhcp then the modem isnt sending it one, in which case thats why you are getting 169.254.. so pinging the modem with that ip address wouldnt of worked anyways..

at this point if its freezing when you go to uninstall..you might have a hardware conflict in which case i would just reinstall windows..its not a dead nic..if it was you wouldnt be able to install drivers for it and it wouldnt recogonize it after the drivers were installed..

I did some things.

When i try to do what phaelix said when i get to the Update driver, i click on specific location and point it to the folders & subfolders to search it comes back with "Can not find drivers better then the ones i have" not excatly it's words but you get the idea.

So i can't go anyfurther then that.

Also i pinged myself, that went thru.

But then i type ipconfig/renew and it takes about a minute and says:

"An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 4: unable to contact your DHCP Server. Request has timed out."

So your saying that i should not go out and buy a cheap little NIC card to see if that works? I'd rather try that and see if it works instead of reformatting my hard drive, again. thanks again.

Actually, now it sounds like your cable modem is having issues. Turn off the PC, turn off the modem, unplug it, unscrew the cable, wait for 30 seconds, then plug the modem back in. Now hook up the cable. The lights on the modem should flash for a while, then it will automatically come up. Now turn on the PC.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES OVER.

I don't know what we did that was so different, i did just what you told, plus i held in the reset switch on the back of the modem for about 30 seconds, i have no idea if that helped or not, but it's working now!

You are the absolute man, thank you for spending the time with me and getting back to me the way you did, i owe you, i don't know how i could repay you, if you lived near me i'd buy you some drinks or something, again thank you! you probably saved me some money and precious time reformatting, i was going to do that tommorrow if nothing else worked..i'm typing from that computer now. awesome, just awesome, you rule.

Your cable modem is MAC address based. You need to reset the modem everytime you switch PC's. I had the exact same issue at my parents place.

You would think by now the modem manuals would start to mention this.

IT'S BACK! But this time when i do the same exact stuff i did to fix it, nothing is coming up. the connection is working fine on my older computer. I really don't get this and it's becoming very annoying. Is there a certain order i need to detach the cables? What could be the problem? This is really getting on my nerves. Is the modem? If it was why would it work fine on my old computer? I even held in the reset switch for at least a minute, still nothing. AAHHHHHH!

Ah yes, the MAC-reset function. I once called my ISP tech and they said I should hold it off for a few minutes before I hook it up again with another PC. The MAC has to be removed in order to open itself to a new foreign MAC-based device. Sometimes during the most weirdest case, I had to even let it go for an hour before it would work. Sometimes the IP would have to be reset.

Well i got to frustrated and ran up to CompUSA and bought a NIC card. Slapped that thing in and what do you know, up comes the internet, so i guess the onboard NIC is screwed up or just not working at all....i really don't even care now, as long as i have it working, plus i had an extra pci slot anyway.

its so fuuny , after reading all this i was just about to suggest that the onboard nic was toast,, well congrats away

Your referring to the router....not a modem. And if your using a POS brand router, like a D-Link or Netgear, this is a sign that it's dying.

I use a Netgear router, never had a problem with it.
