Thinking my powersupply was bad because it buzzed slightly when the computer was off. I bought another one this weekend. An Antec 750watt 25a (on all rails) powersupply.

I got home from a buddies house saturday afternoon and plugged it in and got my system fired up. The new one has a slight buzz as well with the computer off.

I was at a buddies house saturday for a LAN and after plugging it in, didn't notice any buzzing but to be honest if wasnt super quiet so I didn't notice.

In thinking it was the power upstairs being dirty I moved it downstairs and it did the same thing. I really don't think either power supply is bad at this point but have no explanation of why it's happening.

Does anyone have a p/s that has a slight humm/buzz with the system off but the switch on the power supply on?

Trying to figure out the issue before I drop cash on a battery backup or something to act as a go between from the wall power and computer (aside from just a surge protector).

I just listened to the brand new Lenovo machines at work with just the power cord plugged in and they emit a slight buzz to them as well. Albiet quieter due to the size of the p/s being really small.

thanks
Jake

Try a ground lift (2 prong adapter for 3 prong) and if that takes the buzz out then you need to find the offending appliance or outlet. Bad thing is it could be 2 outlets causing this loop and that will take a while to find. Ground loops are the worst enemy in the A/V business. If all else fails get a power conditioner instead of a ups. If you cant hear it through your audio then its not enough to worry about.

I'm going to get an APC Line-R 1200VA Automatic Voltage Regulator unit this week just in case. I only have 3 items to plug into it so that should be sufficient.

I just read that all power supplies are on to some extent, otherwise the button to turn the pc on wouldn't work.

Must not be the buzz i was talking about then cuz its abnormal and annoying. Good choice on the APC works great.

The buzzing is the PFC (power factor correction) and happens with many of todays power supplies. It is really nothing to worry about although different makes and models do it on varying sound levels and pitches. Kudos on the APC UPS, they are a must have and very nice to have when you lose power in the middle of the night and your PC, Monitor and light (recommended) if hooked up, stays on. It gives you a feeling of power.... or is it magic?
