RIAA Sets Gunsights on Binary Newsgroups

I never said pirating was legal. I also didn't say that since everyone is doing it, its legal. That's like saying "hey everyone is jumping off the bridge, it must be right!" All I wanted to say was the current course of just suing everything and everyone is quite pointless. This will just cause things to become more underground than it already is.

And 'pushing it more underground', I would contend, is the entire point and purpose of copy protection and enforcement of copyright law, and has been right from the outset of its implementation.

Trying to eliminate all piracy activities from the face of the planet would be a forlorn and useless dream. Controlling and minimising casual piracy is the name of the game, and the more you marginalise the activity the more people will shy away from it. At present it is seen by many people as 'normal activity', but make it a more nefarious activity and it becomes a less attractive one.

They not only exist, they're alive and well here in the states.I'm surprised they aren't in your area, thought they were much more liberal towards censorship over there.

We are a lot more liberal towards censorship, if it wasn't for the kiddieporn on the binary groups we'd still have binaries over here.

Maybe this RIAA attack will open up peoples eyes.

The RIAA will get whats coming to them. One day. OR rather the people responsible for the extortion racket they have going.

It's plainly obvious these fools do not understand how Usenet works and if they try to go after Usenet providers or ISP's that provide Usenet, that still won't work. Usenet is basically the last and best refuge for the juarez pirate. :D

You really think by trying to make it a forbidden activity, that it will stop kids from engaging in it? Are you really from this planet? Sex, drugs, pornography, and alcohol are all forbidden or restricted from minors, but that only makes the activity more exciting and desirable. The forbidden fruit looks twice as sweet.

Read up on prohibition. More people drank alcohol after prohibition than before.

It's already referred to as pirating, and don't pirates have a nefarious reputation?

It's going to work if they dare to bring the people responsible for the servers hosting the newsgroup data to court for hosting illegal material and win.

"Welp, back to paying for my software", eh? :p

Personal insults do nothing to further debate or argument, and unless you're more than 8 grand-children in then I'm not only from this planet but have more experience of it than you anyway, BladeVenom :)

You missed the point entirely, by the way. I explained that the efforts aren't an attempt to 'forbid'. they're an effort to make the activity a less enticing one.

So it's not theft? Phew! <erasing that sin off my list of sins>

Duh? No, it's NOT theft, it's COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ~ and no, theft is not the only illegal activity, so just because it's not theft, that doesn't mean that it is legal. But, excuse me, you said "sin" - yes, of course, copyright infringement must be in the Bible, listed as a sin... ROFL :D One of the new "Eight Deadly Sins"? Let's let the RIAA pick the next pope!

Calling copyright infringement theft is about as logical as calling speeding rape.

Do you people want to just narrow every illegal activity down to ONE charge and call it "crime"? And anybody convicted of crime gets the exact same punishment?

How about we just sterilize anyone convicted of "crime", then criminals will stop breeding? :p

It is 100% impossible for them to catch someone using it with giganews at least.

They have SSL encryption, so the anyone from your computer to ISP can't see what you are downloading. Also, giganews only keeps logs of specific groups and bytes downloaded. They do not keep logs of names of files.

You know, normally I'd make some RIAA rant here... but with the event of things and the way it's going... I wouldn't be surprised if these bastards came on here and sued everyone for libel or focused their searches/investigations on those who speaks bad of them on forums.
