I have LG W2420R with the same panel and I do not see it becoming darker like CCFL monitors like to do. It got little more pinkish which suggest more strain on green diodes. It is uniform though and easily corrected in service menu (for built in modes) or via hardware calibration.
Contrast ratio is ridiculously good on those panels and hardware calibration does not decrease it and calibration change both black and white color. Black color is always when RGB subpixels have maximum possible light blocking (level 0) and white when they have maximum transmittance (level 1023) because white point is changed by RGB backligt itself.
One thing to note though, my LG is PWM and HP probably too using PWM. Its text rendering is also slightly worse than that of native sRGB monitors (every wide-gamut monitor have this issue). Other than that colors look perfectly sRGB (unlike monitors like Dell U2410 which had crappy sRGB emulation) and general picture quality destroys everything else I ever saw.
As for dithering on HP I have no idea, my LG does not have any visible dithering. I guess it was noticeable on HP only with magnifying glass on 100% brightness analyzing darkest shades of grey ==> nothing to worry about, especially for price they are going today and their superior color quality compared to likes of EIZO that are 3-4x more expensive with cheapest models.
I would say: buy it
I would buy LP2480ZX myself without any hesitation if my LG broke and I would not consider anything else
