RGB Experts?

I'm trying to figure out how I can discern 'ranges' of color in RGB format.

I want to divide RGB values into greens, browns and blues.. but I'm not sure how to read a RGB value as X,Y,Z being greenish for example.

I've thought about taking the largest value in the returned string and using that to decide which color has the greatest overtone.. but in some cases that just wont work the way I would like it to. Maybe I should evaluate the returned RGB value and decide on a spread which will make a tone more green or blue.. or brown.

I was hoping someone here might have some insight as to where I might start..

Figured it out, I'll use HSV instead
