Rfid Or Similar Tech?

I lose or misplace Items and it can be frustrating. For a fun project I am trying to find a way to tag my more valuable items and have a scanner to find them. I note that passive RFID tags has a short distance. Active ones seem to go further but are bigger. I will be tagging small items and also I want the tags as inconspicuous as possible.

Question is, what can I use to effectively scan and find tags up to 20 yards away? Doesn't have to be RFID but its just what I've been reading about.
