Revolution to be unveiled on May 9, 2006
Nintendo will take the wraps off the next-generation console at its press briefing before next year's E3 expo.

During its pre-E3 press conference in May, Nintendo disappointed many by revealing little about the Revolution. Other than showing off a mock-up of the console form factor and announcing the console would play NES, SNES, N64, and GameCube games, the game giant revealed little about the next-generation console. In the months since, it has let a few details about the Revolution trickle out, the most significant being pictures of its much-vaunted controller--which has been much-derided for its resemblance to a TV remote control.

Today, though, gamers got a definite date when Nintendo will absolutely, positively reveal the Revolution in all its glory. The Mario factory sent out a "save the date" e-mail this morning saying that in "a mere 165 days to go (give or take)" it will reveal "all the incredible details about Nintendo's upcoming games and hardware, including our next home console, code-named Revolution."

So when will be the Revolution's coming-out party? Unsurprisingly, it will be at next year's E3. Specifically, the console will be unveiled at Nintendo's pre-E3 press event, which is slated for 9:30 a.m. Pacific time on May 9, 2006. The venue will be the Kodak Theatre--home of the Academy Awards--in Hollywood, California.

...so much for a Spring 2006 release.

Nintendo is effectively saving the system for a time when nobody will care...why? The Xbox 360 is out now and flying off of store shelves and the Playstation 3 launch is expected to come right around the time that Nintendo is planning to make this announcement.

Why would they do this?

I dont know, but all i have to sayis, it better be one AMAZING piece of hardware in order to pull ANY thing off with it.! (whitch is looking doubtful)

This isn't news.. nintendo has stated many times that all will be known about the revolution by E3.. and still E3 we will jsut get little bits and pieces of info..

i don't see what you'r arguement is anyway... nintendo isn't trying to compete wit hmicrosoft or sony.. they're tyring to be different enough so that they aren't lumped in the same group as sony and microsoft.. so essentially.. their release dates should have nothing to do with the other companies dates..

Nintendo isn't trying to "compete" with them officially because they know they can't. If they were outselling Microsoft/Sony, you can rest assured that they would be comparing themselves to the others to make themselves look better. It's basic marketing.

Fact of the matter; they are competing with Microsoft/Sony. They're not doing well. They've been outsold by entry-level competitors two generations in a row, and to top that off, they're going to let each of those companies build momentum before they even show the best parts of their next system.

What?

They're not appealling to the masses--they're going for the underdog strategy, and sticking with it. They don't need to run UT2k7 at 4 billion frames--they just need decent power behind the hardware, which they should most definitely have.

Honestly, I think the only one that's made the mistake is MS. There's no freaking games for the 360 worth purchasing except Perfect Dark Zero.

Oh yes, and keep in mind that Nintendo still made a profit on their last system--more than MS can say. Sony made more, of course, but that's just because they had ridiculous sales figures, and tons of peripherals/games.

PS3 = Fall 2006.
Nintendo Revolution = Fall 2006

20 million XBoxes vs 18.5 million Gamecubes means nothing when the XBoxes lose you 4 billion dollars, while the 18.5 million Gamecubes make all kinds of money. Sony took a bath on hardware, too.

Playing the secrecy card could help them, or it could fuck 'em. They're just taking that chance - and probably for a reason.

Nintendo's next offering is the only 'next-gen' console I have a slight interest in. I am sick and fucking tired of hearing about how powerful and how amazing the graphics are on the 360, and how much of a beast the PS3 is going to be. So what. We need something more than new consoles with better graphics.

Oh god Nintendo should just completely give up no one ever buys their stuff!

Nintendo was rolling out great games before ZX6Master was a sperm.

Yes, we need MGS4, RE5, and Killzone 2. They're all sequels, but good christ do they look like AWESOME sequels.

I'm waiting for 99 night too--only because of Tetsuya Miziguchi's genius, though.

Microsoft expects the loss. To them, it isn't losing four-billion; it's gaining marketshare. Their strategy (And that of Sony, too) is to gradually gain marketshare so that they can bleed Nintendo of third-party support. It's happening slowly, but it's working.

Nintendo is counting on their fans to stick with them to the end. That is a fair assumption, considering those fans have been around for ~20 years. The problem? They're going out on a limb with the wand to attract non-gamers with a gimmick. Whether or not they alienate their fanbase remains to be seen.

Another problem with this strategy is that the industry is growing. Nintendo is planning on retaining the same amount of customers while Microsoft/Sony are continually gathering more. Developers will show vocal support for innovation, but what they really care about are numbers. They want a large consumer base so that they may break even. If Microsoft/Sony have more consumers, they're going to get the developers (Hell, they already have).

Troll much, MonsterLives? Thank God for the ignore list.

Industry has been shrinking for a while now...and the numbers are beginning to dwindle with the hardcore group. Nintendo's got the most intelligent approach, from one perspective. Sony's not trying to get marketshare--it's got that. There's a reason the PS2 was the best selling console by a longshot. They're trying to get totalitarian control of the market--something they always intend to do, but it blows up in their faces.

MS is trying to get market share--but they'll never get any profit from it. My guess? They give the game up after the 360 or maybe the next console. They may be able to take the hits the Xbox market is giving them, but face it--you don't become a billionaire by losing money.

I think Sony and Nintendo will live through this to be rivals for a good long while (think ATi and nVidia). MS just seems like a gimmick placement to me.

This just sounds like the OP is trying to start a flame war..

i don't know how many times this same crap has been brought up..

let's just wait and see what happens..

and by the way.. if you've kept up with nintendo.. they have stated many times that they are trying to expand the gaming market.. not keep what they have..

The revolution is the only system i might actually pre order... as for PS3 and Xbox im gonna wait out a bit before i get either.

So you relate your opinion and immediately ask for a lock? Interesting; the other threads thrashing certain games/systems aren't being locked. Why would mine? The only reason why this would turn to flames is if more people make comments like yours.

What in the Hell are they thinking?

i'm just basing on this line..

like i said.. this subject has been brought up a million times.. and well this on instance of it.. just sounds like it's trying to start arguements.

how about you edit that line with a

"I don't understand why they're are doing this?"

and i'll retract my vote for a lock (not like my vote for a lock means anything LOL!!)

I'll buy the next Nintendo console for the same reason I always have: Mario, Zelda, and Metriod.

As long as Nintendo keeps making games with the characters from these titles, I'm sure I will contintue to buy their consoles. So for that reason I'm looking forward to the Nintendo Revolution becuase I want to play the next installment of Mario, etc...

I just hope they show some great new games at the next E3.

To answer the OP topic.
Maybe it doesn't matter when they release there console. I'm not saying everyone thinks like me, but I buy Nintendo products for a different reason than I buy a Playstation or an XBox. I buy them for the reasons listed above.

It's more than just graphics upgrades for the Xbox 360. It's quite amazing what they've done with Xbox Live, and Nintendo isn't too far behind with their network being put into place. It seems to me that Sony has lost touch with the gamers and will fall behind.

Playstation 3 so far is the only console not bringing anything new to the table, except for "making regular videos HD videos!". Xbox Live is what will keep 360 afloat, and Nintendo finally sees this. Sony is playing stubborn, and they're going to pay for it.

I doubt the thousands of PS fans will care. Most of them will buy the next PS, because it's a PS.

QFT I'll be getting a revolution whenever it comes out. I'll prob get a 360 soon as well to get the best of both worlds.

how much money made on consoles/lost on consoles doesnt mean shit to developers, you know that right?and that billgates probably has more money in his pocket then nintendo or sony is worth

Of course it means shit to developers. But it means everything to the company who's making the hardware. Calls for Nintendo's doom into "the next Sega" will never happen because Nintendo consistently makes the most money, in combination with the handheld market and the console market.

Bill Gates can continue to pour billions into the XBox, which is still a lost cause, but as someone in this thread said... you don't become a billionaire by losing money. It's going to stop at some point unless they start making the $5bill back.

Luckily for Nintendo, the Revolution already has more support than the N64 and Gamecube combined, both vocal and actual commitance of game development.

MS makes the money off all the companies they buy and take them into there microsoft gamestudios, shit 6.4million copys of halo2 were sold back in january, thats alot of money, then they have alot of other popular titles there planning to profit this round considering there only looseing half the money on consoles now(360s loose like $150 and less per console, where xbox1 was $300 lost on every console)

I don't know, I see Sony as knowing exactly what gamers want in a new system: a huge variety of titles (you have to admit the PS series has had by far the widest selection of games), the next installments in popular franchises (GTA, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, etc), the most powerful hardware (well, with the PS3 they will have this), backwards compatibility that is nearly 100% effective (so you can think of your game library as an investment, you don't have to toss a lot of your old titles, or all of them, when the next system comes along... it is nice that Nintendo is doing this as well with the Rev. Microsoft and it's ridiculous convoluted backwards compatibility system for the 360 is just laughable), and lots of value added features (The PS2 is the only current gen system that played DVDs out of the box, the Playstation was a CD player when no othe system could, the PS3 will be a media server and a Blu-Ray player).

It would be nice for Sony to make up some kind of Xbox-live style online system, but most gamers don't care about it. Personally, though I think Xbox-live is sort of cool, and playing online can be OK sometime, I'd much rather play either single player or with people I know in the actual room than over a network with strangers, especially since most of the online gamers are the hardcore junkies that ruin the fun of the game for everyone else.

Personally, I am sick and tired of being force fed the same old stuff generation after generation. If I have to play another mindless, button mashing, repetitive and predictable, mass produced, five star rated blockbuster game I think I'm going to shoot myself. I applaud nintendo for trying something new. A lot of people are calling it a gimmick and saying that it will alienate their fanbase but you don't know until you try it. It might actually make playing console games fun again, which is what nintendo has always been about.

I really miss super nintendo... best system ever. Nintendo should re-release it and get square to make some more awesome games.

For the record, I have owned the xbox, ps2, and gamecube... these are the best games of this generation, in my opinion of course:

Resident Evil 4 - Gamecube
Metroid Prime + Echos - Gamecube
Ratchet and Clank (all) - PS2
Smash Brothers Melee - Gamecube

QFT

that is a huge fact that many people seem to ignore.. they don't realize that..

I was listening to sports talk radio and today they were talking about videogames for a little bit. It was funny because The Super Star Mike Morris (host of the show) was talking about how he likes old school Nintendo games. He talked about the number of unneccisary sex and violence in todays videogames. He also went on to say that when his little kids grow up and are old enough to play, he will buy them "A regular Nintendo".

SSSPPPRRRIIITTTTEEESSS BBBEYYYACCHH!!! Know your roots.

Next years E3 is going to be awesome.

PS3 = Fall 2006
Revolution = Fall 2006

I also expect the Revolution to get a different name at E3

The Super Duper Nintendo!!!

Where is the proof of "actual commitance"? Until the games are actually released, all commitments are just vocal.

I remember when Nintendo fans were swooning overa verbal commitment for a Final Fantasy game. Look how that turned out

Again, you seem to have missed the point. The industry is expanding and Sony/Microsoft are taking control of marketshare. If things continue the way they're going now, they will be able to dry up the rest of the already mediocre third-party support that follows Nintendo. Would you rather release your game in a consumer base of 100+ million or less than 20 million?

http://www.n-sider.com/articleview.php?articleid=344&page=4

Here's an incomplete list from September, I believe.
Since then, Ubisoft has commited an FPS, Namco has commited 2 games, Kojima has said he's working on an exclusive Rev IP, Capcom and Sega have given it the OK, and there are plenty more who have given it the heads up (large and small, like Harmonix, Mistwalker, and Zoonami), and many more who have been vocal in their support. The vocal support doesn't include games, sure. But one step at a time. As I said, it's already got much more support than the last 2 generations. And if you throw handhelds into the mix, Nintendo has more marketshare than both Sony and Microsoft, anyway. Microsoft is very friendly with the North American developers, but in Japan they are still doing abysmally, and it looks to continue this gen.

Are you just bound and determined to hate the Rev? Because that's really what it seems like.

Ballz...you'd make a horrible businessman.

And you seem to miss the point, ZX. It doesn't matter if you have market share if YOU'RE NOT MAKING ANY MONEY. And trust me, it's going to take MS a long time to make money of this endeavor and the xbox combined, considering they lose 124/console sold right now, and they lost billions on the xbox. Sony will do okay, as they ALWAYS have the volume of sales to make up for it later on, along with their own studio games which usually sell pretty well.

Not to mention that Nintendo has great 3rd party support. The only games not released on the GC are ones that they BLOCKED from getting released on the GC--mainly Rockstar games. Only Final Fantasy has abandoned them, but that was back in the days of the PS1.

you do know the whole reason MS got into the gaming industry right, and it definatly wasnt profit just to hint you off

...yeah...no Business ever goes into a market to make a profit. Not like that's the point of businesses.

OH WAIT.

Awww.... Get fragged too much? :p

I am not at all interested in the Xbox 360, or the PS3. Last 2 consoles I got were the ps2 and the ps1 and the super nintendo before that. I don't even have a gamecube.

Thing is, I've already played a hefty amount of games made for the PS2 and Xbox(and I don't even own an Xbox). This is because many of these games are ported to PC. Xbox and PS3 are still going to be making the same types of games which I will still want to play...but on my PC.

But the Revo is going to provide me with a different set of games, and that's why I care. Chances of them providing me with the same kinds of games is low, and even if they do, the changed control interface would jazz it up a bit at least.

But really, I don't think anybody in this thread honestly believes they'll change anyone else's mind about any console. Similarly, I don't think anybody in this thread is willing to change their own mind either. If you've come in being at least somewhat informed on the next-gen topic, you've probably heard all the arguments flying about and have already formed your own set opinion.

The only PC ports I ever saw from the PS2 were Rockstar games, to be honest. I really don't understand how people can say the PS2 is all ports when I rarely ever see the stuff on the PC.

The Xbox, however, is obviously a "pc replacement". :p

Just 5 more months kids!! :D

This is what I expect:

1) A finalized name for code name "Revolution".
2) Details about their online service as well as their download service.
3) 1st PARTY GAMES!!! And 3rd party game announcements / previews for Rev / DS.
4) A new model of DS along with further explanation of the connectivity with Rev.
5) full details about the controller, with the exo skeleton

Most importantly 1st party games!!!

can anyone add to my list?

Nintendo is great for kids, the games for the most part are garbage in my opinion. there is a reason that game cube sold the fewest number of units compared to ps2 and xbox.

i think Microsoft made an amazing move by releasing before christmas, it will put them leaps and bounds ahead of Sony and especially Nintendo in the "next-gen console battle"

1) There is a reason--bad marketing strategies. A la Dreamcast. But I think it actually jumped ahead of the Xbox, not sure though.

2) Amazing move? More like stupid move--they weren't ready for this release. But it does put them ahead in marketing. We'll see how it ends up.

I personally cannot wait until Nintendo finally shows us what we've been waiting for! Like someone earlier said, this will be the only system that I will (and have ever) pre-order, just for the simple reason that I love nintendo and I firmly believe what the revo will offer is going to be different. I've come to terms with the no HD and I still want to see and will buy it! I think nintendo will be here for a long time, god the company itself is older than dirt and I doubt the gaming community would allow nintendo to stop making systems! Sega was a fluke, I still think they should of stuck it out but I digress.
